Ann Arbor/Saline classic bicycle show, help wanted at SELMA Cafe & cell phones for Haiti

By Edward Vielmetti

One of last summer's prominent marketing messages for AnnArbor.com was "you, what, where, when, why".

Here's a look at what's in my inbox this morning with those 5 key elements of a news story firmly in mind.

You: Paul and Anne Kleppert of Beverly Hills, Mich., and their loyal group of dedicated volunteers.
What: the upcoming 30th Annual Ann Arbor/Saline, Michigan
Classic Bicycle Show and Swap Meet
.
Where: Last year's show was at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor/Saline Road; I'm confirming details of this year's show.
When: April 25, 2010.
Why: You have a fondness for classic and antique bicycles, like this prize winning 1898 Chilton from Neil Bailey.

You: Lisa Gottlieb and Jeff McCabe, organizers of Friday Mornings @SELMA Cafe, a weekly fundraising breakfast for sustainable local foods efforts.
What: Looking for someone to help as volunteer coordinator for the breakfast series, since their current full-time "kitchen angel," Susie Baity Stearns, has a new work situation ("yay").
When: Breakfast is every Friday morning. You'll need to be prepared to recruit volunteers for Thursday prep, Friday cooking and cleaning and to make sure that each weekly guest chef is prepped and ready to go.
Where: Join SELMA at 722 Soule Blvd. in Ann Arbor every Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for breakfast; suggested donation is $10 to $15.
Why: You're a fan of locally grown eggs, backyard chickens, chopping vegetables for 100 and cleaning up afterward — and you can recruit friends and acquaintances who share your enthusiasm.

You: Christine Tibbetts, travel writer for the Tifton (Georgia) Gazette, writing that Ann Arbor is a tasty and talented vacation place.
What: Lobster bisque from Le Dog and beautiful handmade paper at Hollander's.
When: "A blustery December visit; must be really nice in the spring."
Where: Tifton is in Tift County, Georgia, home of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. It was settled in the mid 1800s by Captain Henry Harding Tift of Mystic, Conn. who harvested the local pine timber for the family shipbuilding business.
Why: Tifton has 5 barbeque joints in a town of 14,000, but no place serving lobster bisque from a walk-up hot dog stand.

You: Kid Cudi, the star of Dat New Cudi, the self-proclaimed "#1 Kid Cudi Source Online."
What: A review of the Kid Cudi show with a photo set from AnnArbor.com photographer Melanie Maxwell.
Where: The Michigan Theater.
When: Jan. 11, 2010.
Why: Perhaps you missed the show and want to check out photos and concert footage from the rest of his tour.

You: Kay Van Orman, account manager for the charitable donation programs of ReCellular.
What: Phones for Haiti, a new program to donate used cell phones to raise funds for relief of the Haiti earthquake.
Where: ReCellular is a Dexter-based cell phone recycling company. You print a label from their Web site, ship a box of donated phones to them and they recondition and resell the phones. Proceeds are donated to the American Red Cross.
Why: The Haiti earthquake devastated one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere. Aid agencies and governments around the world are scrambling to help with rescue, cleanup and rebuilding efforts.
