Chinese New Year links

By Edward Vielmetti

For Chinese New Year coming up on Feb. 14, here is a list of links - certain to be incomplete - of area organizations serving the Chinese community.

Ann Arbor Chinese Center of Michigan - Located at Northside Elementary School, the Ann Arbor Chinese Center of Michigan was founded in 1974. It runs weekly classes in its Chinese school on Friday evenings.

Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan. CCS was founded in 1961, originating from the Oriental Civilizations Program established at U-M in 1930. They host a noon lecture series on Tuesdays in their offices at the School of Social Work Building, 1080 South University. The Center for Chinese Studies weblog has news of upcoming events.

The Chinese Film Series at the Center for Chinese Studies shows free films every other week on Saturday nights. The weblog has previews and trailers, and the next scheduled film is At Home in the World, a film by independent documentary film maker Wu Wenguang.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan opened in November 2009. It is one of more than 60 in the United States and aims to foster educational cooperation between the two countries and to promote education in the Chinese language.

The China Data Center at the U-M is an international center for the study of China, founded in 1997. Its data collections include census and demographic data, statistics and business data, and GIS and mapping information. The center partners with a number of Chinese government agencies and companies in the distribution and analysis of data about China.

Hua Xing Asia Market (2867 Washtenaw Ave., Ypsilanti) is an enormous Asian grocery located at the former home of Dunning Toyota. It is stocked with an large quantity of imported food; their categories include Canned Food, Chinese Herbs/Herbal Mix, Drinks/Wines, Frozen Food, Gifts, Ginsengs, Health Supplements, House Ware, Noodles, Phone Cards, Powder, Refrigerated Food, Restaurant Supplies, Rice/Beans, Sauces/Spices/Oils, Seafood/Meat, Snacks/Cookies/Candies, Supplemental Teas, Sushi Ingredients, and Vegetables/Fruits.

The new Asia City restaurant next door gets a review by Kitchen Chick of their dim sum offerings. "What we had was good, but on the expensive side. We're going to show you some photos now, and circle back with them in a while to actually review them because there's no point in reviewing a restaurant during its first week."

Xua Hing had three Chinese language free weekly newspapers on the stands. The Greater Detroit Chinese-American News Weekly is based in Northville; the Michigan Chinese American News is based in Ann Arbor (no web site that I can find); and the Epoch Times is based in Chicago and has a Midwest edition.
