Valentine's Day in the news through the years

By Edward Vielmetti

From kidneys to condoms to free bus rides to serial killers to Woody Hayes, here's just a thin slice of Valentine's Day in Ann Arbor history.

1996. Surgeons in Ann Arbor and Palo Alto did kidney transplants on Valentine's Day; in each case, the husband received the donation of a kidney from his wife. ("Transplant of spousal kidney goes well", San Francisco Chronicle).

1992. The University of Michigan group ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) is at Pioneer High School to distribute condoms to students in celebration of Valentine's Day. The group was asked to leave by the school principal, who threatened to call police. ("Condoms in the classrooms", Michigan Daily; "City attorney begins new post", Michigan Daily).

1979. An Ann Arbor Transportation Authority bus driver was suspended without pay for one week after offering customers free rides on Valentine's Day. ("For Love or Money", Michigan Daily).

1978. Serial killer Ted Bundy was captured in Pensacola, Florida. Bundy had moved to Ann Arbor on New Year's Eve in 1977 after escaping from a Colorado prison, taking a room at the YMCA for $12. He left town soon afterwards because his name was in the news, it was too cold and the student housing market was too expensive. ("Ted Bundy - a trail of blood", UPI / Lodi News-Sentinel)

1913. Ohio State University football coach Woody Hayes is born in Clifton, Ohio on Valentine's Day in 1913. A 1962 Sports Illustrated profile describes Hayes in terms that would be unusual for a Michigan fan; the University of Michigan is not mentioned a single time in the story, with the only in-state quote coming from Michigan State's Duffy Daugherty.

Huh, how did that get there - fixed now, thanks Rod. (I blame Woody Hayes.)

Valentine Day? Is that a stylebook thing?
