  • Lunch with Heuser: 'Borderline' possibility of McGuffie transfer

    by Philip Zaroo | MLive.com
    Thursday November 20, 2008, 9:49 AM

Rumors are flying that running back Sam McGuffie will transfer from Michigan after freshman year. But Ann Arbor News Wolverines beat writer John Heuser says that there is nothing new with the story, and that McGuffie shouldn't be discouraged by his diminishing role this year.

"The coaches have confidence in him," Heuser points out during his weekly Q&A, "and he's been used much more this year than a typical freshman. I hope he stays, because I think he'll be a contributor throughout his career."

Still, Heuser thinks it's too close to say whether McGuffie is leaning toward staying at Michigan or transferring to a different school.

"I'd say borderline," he says. "The fact that he pulled himself from the lineup last week is a bad sign. But I'm sure the coaches will really try to convince him that he'll benefit by staying, which I think it true."

Read the entire Q&A transcript below:

Lunch with Heuser: Michigan at Ohio State Q&A(11/20/2008)

    12:04
John Heuser:  Good afternoon everyone. Ready to talk Michigan football whenever you are. The Game (105th version) is two days off at Ohio Stadium. What do you think?

    12:04
    [Comment From andy]
how much more offseason attrition do you expect and do you think any starters will leave or will it be mainly disillusioned back ups?

    12:05
John Heuser:  I'd say the latter. The guys that we talk with often in media settings seem pleased with the coaching staff and the direction of the program. I'd imagine nearly all the young guys who are playing will be sticking around.

    12:05
    [Comment From Brian]
Is there a chance McGuffie transfers after this year? His role has been scaled way back (for good reason)

    12:06
John Heuser:  Perhaps. But I don't see any reason for him to get discouraged about his role. The coaches have confidence in him, and he's been used much more this year than a typical freshman. I hope he stays, because I think he'll be a contributor throughout his career.

    12:07
    [Comment From Cincywolve]
What kind of string does Coach Rodreiguez have after the terrible season and his less than spectacular relationship with big Blue media and fans?

    12:08
John Heuser:  I think he's going to get time to show that he can turn things around. I can't speak for other media, but I've got a very solid relationship with him, and on a personal level, he's a likeable guy.

    12:08
    [Comment From andy]
any chance we see something very different this weekend, such as feagin running some option with minor and brown or some trick plays?

    12:09
John Heuser:  If you're going to do that stuff, this would be the week. But you've gotta have confidence in the execution. With Schilling likely out, the OL will be weaker, that's for sure. BTW, Rod has esssentially closed practices down to outsiders this week. We didn't get to watch anything Wednesday.

    12:09
    [Comment From shoeprint]
Justin Feagin is said to play... why use him in the last 3 to 4 games instead of using him from the beginning? He is a spread QB right?

    12:10
John Heuser:  It mostly came down to his understanding the system and the plays. His knowledge level early on wasn't what it needed to be. Even now, he's behind Threet and Sheridan on that front.

    12:10
    [Comment From AaronH]
Have you heard any update on McGuffie returning to AA?

    12:11
John Heuser:  Nothing since yesterday afternoon when Rod said he was hoping that Sam would be back in town last night.

    12:11
    [Comment From Rick]
What is the status of Threet? Have you seen Feagin throwing in practice? How does he look?

    12:12
John Heuser:  I'd call Threet doubtful. Didn't practice Tuesday, I'm not sure about Wednesday. And I have seen Feagin throw a little bit. Despite Rods insistence that he can make all the throws, I'm skeptical. He doesn't have a big arm.

    12:12
    [Comment From andy]
was there any immediate reaction at the press conference when coach made the "get a life" comment or did everyone understand it for what it was, not the over blown misrepresentation some media outlets have made of it

    12:13
John Heuser:  The people who were there took it in the full context that Rod intended it. If you read the transcript of what he said, he wasn't taking a swipe at fans, in general. But when he did say "get a life" some red flags went up for me, knowing that that comment would create some controversy.

    12:13
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
Do you know where we can find some video of Forcier of this years games? How is he looking this year?

    12:14
John Heuser:  He's completing about 70 percent of his passes, has far more TDs than picks and is leading his team into the playoffs. Don't know about video, but you can go to his website, QBForce.com, for more on Tate.

    12:14
    [Comment From Blue in AZ]
Do you know if Coach Carr ever attends football practice?

    12:14
John Heuser:  He doesn't, as far as I know. He's kept a very, very low profile this year.

    12:14
    [Comment From andy]
why does martavious odoms keep getting playing time despite being a fumble machine? it seems like when running backs have fumble issues they get benched for it

    12:15
John Heuser:  I think that points to the depth issues at that position. Toney Clemons is the only other option there right now, and I've been more impressed with Odoms among those two.

    12:15
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
have they set up the whole non-conference schedule for next year?

    12:15
    John Heuser:  Still waiting.

    12:15
    [Comment From Brian]
Does it bother you when RR talks about "building a program?" It seems to me the program has been built over the last 40 years

    12:17
John Heuser:  I think what he really means is building HIS program. Just about every new coach who is hired from the outside goes through a similar process, but maybe not to this degree. Jim Tressel talked this week about his first season and some of the challenges he faced (of course beating Michigan took care of a lot of the problems of that year).

    12:17
    [Comment From andy]
what percentage chance is there that threet and schilling pla?

    12:17
John Heuser:  Just a feeling, but I don't think either will go.

    12:17
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
Is C. Brown finally healthy, boy he looked good Sat.

    12:18
John Heuser:  He's still not 100 percent, which I guess is a good sign for his potential. He was limping a bit at practice Tuesday, according to Rod, but still ran very well.

    12:18
    [Comment From andy]
assuming no turnovers, i know big assumption, can michigan hang in this game?

    12:19
John Heuser:  Andy, I see Michigan turning the ball over several times. But even without TOs, I don' t think they can win this one. Too many advantages for Ohio State at the crucial positions (RB, QB, DB, LB).

    12:19
    [Comment From Ken]
Is it fair to say the injury bug has bitten qiute hard, and yet not really taken much blame this year?

    12:21
John Heuser:  Michigan has had a lot of injuries (especially on offense), but I don't know if its too out of the ordinary. I think what the injuries have highlighted is how little depth the team has. Usually M has much better backups than they do this season.

    12:21
    [Comment From andy]
has the media been given any insight into how the new staff has been approaching this rivalry, doing something for osu every week, changes to the routine this week, something to that effect?

    12:22
John Heuser:  As of Monday, the players said they hadn't done a ton of things differently. Michigan has used some blocking dummies this year that are scarlet and gray with the Ohio State "O" painted on them. That's been a regular feature at practice all fall.

    12:22
    [Comment From shoeprint]
would you call the defense a let down? Or are they just on the field to much?

    12:23
John Heuser:  Some of both. Certainly the D hasn't played well at time. As a whole, I'd say the LB and DB play has been disappointed. But a lot of the defensive guys said after the Minny game that the offensive performance really helped them stay fresh.

    12:24
    [Comment From Daryl]
Did LC get this much attention when he took over in 95?

    12:24
    John Heuser:  Not even close.

    12:24
    [Comment From Glen]
Do you think that Rod fully understands the importance of the OSU rivalry, or will he need to experience it once before he gets it?

    12:25
John Heuser:  I think he needs to experience it, especially in Columbus. For the players, fans, and even media, there's nothing like being there in person to get an understanding of just how intense things can get.

    12:25
    [Comment From RR]
What do we need more this weekend to try to come away with a upsetting win. Do we need the defense that is aggressive like against Minnesota or do we need an offense moving it like against purdue or even Minnesota but we didnt get the TD's in that game and had to settle for FG's.

    12:26
John Heuser:  I think, more than anything else, this game will hinge on the running game. Can Michigan control the clock, and can they stop Beanie Wells? Both those things have to happen for Michigan to have a shot.

    12:26
    [Comment From Vince]
Do you expect Michigan to pull out every trick play in the arsenal this week..fake punt etc?

    12:27
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
Do you think Tate can translate that great % to the big ten?

    12:27
John Heuser:  If a chance presents itself. I'm not banking on it, though, since Michigan has such trouble executing its basic plays.

    12:27
John Heuser:  I do think that Tate will be an accurate passer. I don't know much about his arm strength, but I do know that he prides himself on having great throwing technique and is rated as the most accurate passer in the country by Rivals.

    12:27
    [Comment From not good]
It seems to me that RR has no fire for this game, in his press conference this week, he commented on how no one expects UM to play hard or win but that he expects them to play hard (he said nothing about winning.) What kind of message does not having an expectation of winning send to the team??

    12:29
John Heuser:  i'm sure he has plenty of fire in practice, and that's where it's really important. In the media setting, I'm of the opinion that it would look a little silly for him to be anything but business like about this game the way the year has gone.

    12:29
    [Comment From andy]
do you think the majority of the players are behind coach and his program and do you expect any transfers or seniors speaking negatively of him after they leave?

    12:30
John Heuser:  All the players that I've spoken to on that topic feel good about Rod and his program. That said, we don't get to talk to everyone, especially those kids that aren't playing. I'm sure there will be more attritiong, but I think the guys who are playings roles this year will stay, by and large.

    12:30
    [Comment From Ken]
Are both Beaver and Forcier still on track to enroll in January?

    12:31
John Heuser:  As far as I know, but Beaver is recovering from shoulder surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and may not be available for spring ball.

    12:31
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
What's your feeling and Brandon staying or leaving?

    12:32
John Heuser:  I really hope he stays for his sake, but I don't have a gut feeling.

    12:32
    [Comment From GoLionsWin]
Using the common opponent v. common opponent theory (UM v. MSU; MSU v. OSU), if MSU beat UM 35-21, and OSU beat MSU 45-7, how would one properly "weight" (a) the rivalry factor (b) the disparity between UM to MSU, then MSU to OSU, then UM to OSU (c) the reality that "The Vest & Company" realize the opportunity before them to be the team that beats UM by the largest margin of victory ever in this historic rivalry (d) chance that UM wins or Dan Dierdorf starts for the Wolve's at RT? Loosely translated, how does UM avoid a 62-3 type defeat to the Buckeyes?

    12:32
John Heuser:  62-3? I just don't see anything that bad. Something along the lines of 35-7, 42-7. I think that's possible.

    12:33
    [Comment From Vince]
What do you think a win this weekend would for the program..recruiting etc?

    12:33
John Heuser:  Recruiting-wise, I don't think a win is all that important. The biggest impact it would have would be on the off-season spirits of the coaches and players. It would give them all a nice boost of confidence.

    12:33
    [Comment From andy]
if threet is unavailable and sheridan struggles, would they consider giving feagin a chance for an entire series?

    12:34
John Heuser:  I think Rod would have to. My feeling is we could be seeing quite a bit of Mr. Feagin.

    12:34
    [Comment From Aaron]
Do you think Rich will take some big risks against OSU this weekend? I don't see them having a chance without rolling the dice on some high risk/high reward plays.

    12:35
John Heuser:  I'm sure he'd like to (a la Lloyd at the Capital One Bowl last year), but you've gotta have the guys to pull those things off. I don't think Michigan's good enougth to get away with too much trickery.

    12:35
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
How good is JB Fitzgerald and will he start next year?

    12:36
John Heuser:  He's going to be really good, I think he will start next year and apparently he's also an excellent student.

    12:36
    [Comment From dennis]
i have a very bad feeling john, that this could be a worse loss then Dr. strange hayes put on us many years ago. how bad would that hurt our recruitting?

    12:37
John Heuser:  That might hurt a couple of guys on the fence. Certainly wouldn't help. But if a kid likes a coach and sees a chance to play early in his career, I think that's more important than any loss.

    12:37
    [Comment From taterws]
Can Rich Rod use Terell Pryor as a motivational tool for his team?

    12:38
John Heuser:  I'm sure Michigan's D is really fired up to stop him, but I think the players are pretty fired up with using TP for motivation.

    12:39
    [Comment From Blue in AZ]
Rod has been very open about injuries. Contrast that with Carr's fort knox pressers of years past. Do you think Rod should be a little less forthcoming with regards to announcing injuries?

    12:40
John Heuser:  Being in the media, I like what Rod's doing. Most other coaches (not all) do things similarly. Some coaches even put injury updates in their press releases. I don't think it really makes much difference. Certainly not for Pete Carroll, another coach whos is very open about injuries.

    12:40
    [Comment From not good]
Do you think that UM will even try to pass if Sheridan is the only QB -- OSU has been vulnerable to the run up the middle this year.

    12:41
John Heuser:  I the Michigan would love to run the ball all afternoon. To do that, I think the Wolves will need to use both Minor and Brown, and I'm not so sure Minor will be very healthy.

    12:41
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
how much improvement do you think we will see next year? Some people say none at all, I don't believe that.

    12:42
John Heuser:  I think there will be quite a bit of improvement. Outside of BG (if he goes), I don't see anyone who is leaving who can't be replaced by someone equally as talented. Then you figure the rest of the guys who have played will be better, too.

    12:42
    [Comment From GoLionsWin]
Who might appear as a special guest motivational speaker for the Wolverines on Saturday in Columbus? We know Farley is out of the question for sure...

    12:43
John Heuser:  Great question. In the 2006 No. 1 vs. 2 matchup, I think it was Braylon and Charles Woodson. I'm sure someone will make an appearance. Maybe someone from the 69 team? Dierdorf?

    12:43
    [Comment From Ken]
In your opinion, how long before the offensive line gets the talent and depth to get back to what we are accustomed to?

    12:44
John Heuser:  Next year, the group should be much improved. I think Patrick Omameh (a tackle) and RIcky Barnum (a guard) could challenge for starting jobs as redshirt freshmen.

    12:44
    [Comment From John]
Beside Babb and Kates, who else do you see transferring from this team or not having their fifth year renewed?

    12:45
John Heuser:  Tough to say, but in the transfer category I'd put guys who are relatively young (RS sophomore or younger) who have been bypassed by even younger guys on the depth chart. They'll probably want to get a chance to play elsewhere.

    12:45
    [Comment From Class of "89"]
OSU was terrible against Purdue. What are the chances that Feagin plays more to give the suckeyes something to think about? He can throw the ball at least 10yrds can't he?

    12:46
John Heuser:  Yeah, I'd say he can throw it 10 yards. And I do expect him to get more time, even early.

    12:46
    [Comment From andy]
regular feature all fall in that the blocking dummies have been scarlet and gray or adjusted for each opponent?

    12:47
John Heuser:  Scarlet and Gray all fall.

    12:47
    [Comment From uminks]
Is McGuffie gone in yur opinion?

    12:48
John Heuser:  I'd say borderline. The fact that he pulled himself from the lineup last week is a bad sign. But I'm sure the coaches will really try to convince him that he'll benefit by staying, which I think it true.

    12:48
    [Comment From Boots]
Do you think we got a shot next year to get back to a new years day bowl?

    12:49
John Heuser:  I'd say so. Probably not Capital One, but maybe Outback.

    12:49
    [Comment From John]
Not to bring politics into this matter, but President Elect Obama would like to see a playoff, do you foresee any chance of this coming true during his administration?

    12:50
John Heuser:  Hmmm, probably not unless he gets to a second term, and even then I don't know. The new TV deal with ESPN this week pretty much locks in the BCS until 2014.

    12:50
    [Comment From joel]
do you expect will campbell to be with us nextyear?

    12:50
John Heuser:  The buzz is pointing that way.

    12:50
    [Comment From John]
During home games, what is the atmosphere in the press box like?

    12:51
John Heuser:  It's been a very quiet press box this year. Cheering is never allowed in order to keep the environment professional, but there just haven't been too many media in attendance compared to other seasons. Last week, the media seats were more than half empty.

    12:52
    [Comment From Eric]
Do you think that Pryor will be able to handle all the pressure of this rivalry and play a solid game like he has in the last couple weeks? Or do you think he will get rattled and make freshman mistakes?

    12:52
John Heuser:  I think he'll be fine with the rivalry part of it. Michigan's dlinemen, however, feel real good about their chances to put some hits on him. I'm not so optimistic.

    12:52
    [Comment From Boots]
Do you feel that the "we got nothing to lose attitude" will benefit us saturday?

    12:53
John Heuser:  I do .... unless things go wrong early. If OSU gets an early lead, it may be tough for the Wolverines to keep their spirits up.

    12:53
    [Comment From Brian]
C'mon, this is OSU week and we're talking about our recruits for next year?!?!

    12:53
    [Comment From Blue in AZ]
Care to make a guess for next years team? I am guessing 6-6 7-5

    12:54
John Heuser:  Early guess, I'd say 7-5, maybe 8-4 on a stretch.

    12:54
    [Comment From John]
Was wondering if you saw the Michigan Daily's article about how traditional print media like the Ann Arbor News are having a hard time competing against niche blogs like mgoblog, please comment on how the large media outlets will respond and how much longer do you see the printed newspaper being a profitable industry?

    12:56
John Heuser:  As a media aside, I'll keep this brief, I don't really think traditional media are in competition with Web sites like MGoBlog. We don't do a lot of the same things. That being said, we are not a profitable industry, and newspapers all over the country (ours included) are cutting staff. In a year or two, we'll have a much clearer picture of where the print product stands. The Internet will keep getting more and more important to us.

    12:57
    [Comment From mgoblue20]
are there ever any former alum at practices? If so, who?

    12:57
John Heuser:  Rick Leach is a guy who's been there a lot. John Wangler's been in attendance, too. John Kolesar is another guy I've seen at practice.

    12:57
    [Comment From Blue in AZ]
Which team had/has a better chance of beating OSU. This one or the 69 team?

    12:58
John Heuser:  Gotta be '69, which of course did pull off the upset.

    12:58
    [Comment From taterws]
I have a friendly wager with someone. Who do you think cracks the top 10 first, Michigan or Notre Dame?

    12:58
John Heuser:  I'll go with Michigan. I think ND is going to have to go through its own coaching change soon.

    12:59
    [Comment From Terrelle Pryor]
Does the Michigan defense honestly think that they can stop me? They have had problems with quarterbacks like me in the past, can they at least slow me down this week?

    12:59
John Heuser:  Beanie Wells comes first, then you big guy. That's the order of priority.

    12:59
    [Comment From micheng94]
Is Pryor getting better and better? Is Threet?

    1:00
John Heuser:  Yes, definitely. Not so sure on ST.

after the renovations will the big house be the biggest again?

    1:01
    [Comment From Drew]
Is there going to be room for sheridan on the roster for next year?

    1:01
John Heuser:  He will definitely be back.

    1:02
John Heuser:  Sorry I couldn't get to everyone's questions today. There was a lot of participation, so thanks for that. In closing, predictions anyone for Saturday?

I was wondering what advantage do we have with a no huddle offense? We don't have a huddle but a lot of time is taken for the quarterback to yell out signals and check to the sideline a time or two. It seems like there's about as much time between plays with this new system as there was when we went to a huddle. I don't see the advantage

There once was a chap called Theo,
that dreamed of a player named T.O.,
    but UM doesn't have,
    so he grabbed his salve,
and spanked the pain away, hee-oh!

what a great way to end a miserable season. we get to have the guy we wanted run all over us as an Ohio State Buckeye. oh well im still watching the game even if we are down 28 zap at half. Go Blue!

As usual, the troll was allowed to inpersonate me on the chat with a 35-0 OSU prediction.

    How's this for a prediction:

UM takes Pryor's knee out early, but Todd Boeckman leads OSU to a 24-20 win.

UM feels like it is a "moral victory," while Tressel already starts to lose the locker room for next season because of how he screwed his senior QB to give Pryor his job.

Everyone at OSU realizes that loyalty is a one-way street for Tressel, and that Tressel will replace a senior who has worked his butt off for the program and performed admirably in big games with a younger player who isn't significantly better yet on a whim.

The kids know that Tressel has ruined his senior QB's season and NFL chances to play a QB who won't end up winning any more games than Boeckman would have. This does not have many overt consequences, but frays the bonds of trust between coaches and many of the players, thus removing one of the most important intangibles in any program from Tressel and OSU.

Tressel congratulates himself on another "big" victory, and doesn't even know that the end of his temporary dominance over UM has already begun.

Don't kid yourself, any good D1 coach would do the same. RR has been doing it all season from week to week.

Boeckman is good (NFL material not likely), but, any coach with Pryor would have done the same thing.

I am a hard core UM fan. There is no comparison between Tressel and RR. Tressel is one of the best at adjusting during a game and to the players he has. RR is hard head and refuses to adjust (here or at past schools). Maybe OSU will trade with us?

Posted by angrymichfan on 11/20/08 at 2:08PM

Tressel adjusts? Look at both NC games. Those games were lost to coaching, not due to a lack of talent. He can't adjust and plays way too conservative. Mark my words, Tressell will be Lloyd Carr in 3 years. The balance in the Big 10 will shift from OSU to Michigan and Tressel won't know what to do with himself.

Wrong answer. Any coach would do the same thing IF IT WOULD WIN THEM MORE BALL GAMES or IF THE PLAYER WAS SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER. Pryor has a bigger upside, but Boeckman's ability to manage a game trumps Pryor's physical skills at this point. Boeckman gives OSU a better chance at winning than Pryor does. Once Tressel lost the USC game, he jettisoned his senior to accelerate Pryor's growth.

RR hasn't been "doing the same thing" because he doesn't have any experiences players at QB. RR is putting out whoever he thinks gives him the best chance to win.

"I am a hard core UM fan."

No, you aren't; you are just a troll who pretends to be one. And you aren't fooling anyone with this identity, either.

"There is no comparison between Tressel and RR."

Then why did the entire theme of your post compare them? You are correct, though. RR is the "godfather of the spread option." Tressel is a dinosaur who is a step above Lloyd Carr. No comparison.

"Tressel is one of the best at adjusting during a game and to the players he has."

Yeah. That's why he uses a pro set when he has a prototypical spread option QB playing for him right now.

"RR is hard head and refuses to adjust (here or at past schools)."

Yeah. That's why he won at Tulane with a passing offense and at WVU with a running offense. But don't let facts get in the way of your trolling; you haven't before, so why start now?

"Maybe OSU will trade with us?"

    I sure hope not.

    Posted by taterrific2 on 11/20/08 at 2:28PM

A little more on that "trade:"

UM would have won at least eight this year with Boeckman at QB, and another two with Wells at RB.

I'll take the killer B's: Beanie and Boeckman. They can keep Laurinaitis and Tressel, though.

    Posted by kubrick66 on 11/20/08 at 2:35PM

    bquick...

The no huddle in this case is all about getting to the line to see what the defense is doing, then adjusting the play based on their formation.

I expect that in the future with more experience, and a larger play selection the time between plays will be greatly reduced.

    Posted by Flintstone93 on 11/20/08 at 3:08PM

tater, just out of curiosity, is there ANYONE who disagrees with you that is not a "troll" or fake michigan fan?

and one other question, have you predicted one thing this entire year that has actually come to fruition?

Posted by kalkaska on 11/20/08 at 3:15PM

taterrific2, being skeptical is realistic. Your blind allegiance is moronic.

I am skeptical of Rich Rod's coaching. He has not shown great ability to adjust his game plan, especially on D. Tackling, fumbles and poor angles are a sign of poor coaching.

I am a former UofM athlete and big fan. I am skeptical because I want to see UofM return to greatness.

Time will tell if Rich Rod is the best choice. This season has been a disaster. I can only hope next season will be better.

Posted by taterws on 11/20/08 at 3:24PM

"Sweater Vest" has to live up to the promises he made Pryor last year to get him away from Michigan. A big enough paycheck, new car, AND the guaranteed starting job.

    Posted by maizeman90 on 11/20/08 at 3:34PM

    bquick,
the advantage of the no huddle offense is that it keeps the opposing defenses to make substitutions.Since offenses tend to be in better shape it is harder on defenses and wears them out. That allows offenses to move the ball better, obviously.

What a low class thing to say or wish "UM takes Pryor's knee out early"

A true sports fan wants to see a great game and athletes play their best. If wishing/wanting a player hurt is the ony way you think you can win, then true Michigan fans don't want you in their ranks.

    Posted by mankows5 on 11/20/08 at 4:04PM

It is interesting how this sport is and the different mentalities.
I am a former CFB player and have had the opportunity to be around nfl. And the mentality for some of the athletes is brutal. Someone once blew out thier knee in the game. And people were on the sidelines going hahaha that is awesome hes done for the year.

I agree I do not like seeing someone hurt in the game. I dont know if this is because I do not play anymore and I am involved in the sport in different aspects or what. But when I played It was not out of the ordinary to go after someones knees. It is a violent sport and there will never be a way around that. Some people do a better job of keeping thier heads in games and not going over the top. . but when you are going at it with the same lineman or linebacker or whatever banging eachother and trying to shove him into the ground A raw mental feeling eventually gets to you. It is primal and sometimes the survival mode kicks in and you want to kill the person across from you.

Anyway long rantt sorry but I guess I dont know where I stand on the issue. As a human I do not want to see anyone hurt at all.. As a player on the field sometimes agression gets to you in such an agressive sport. And with people around you that all feel and act the same way it happens. More than it should.

Posted by burgerfliper on 11/20/08 at 4:04PM

    MomOfAthlete,
Taterrific2 is either immature or just plain dumb. Either way, it's clear he has never played any sports. To say what he said is, like you said, classless.

McGuffie will follow Boren to Columbus and become the next Maurice Wells, which is still better than being a loser in Michigan. Book it!

Posted by umguy on 11/20/08 at 5:07PM

Wouldn't mind seeing Feagan a lot. I remember back in the late 70's or early 80's when Rich Hewlett made his first start against OSU. Although UM didn't win the game, I think he played pretty good. I don't remember if he played the whole game or not. Just put your most athletic players on the field and let them do what they do best.

Rod needs to find a way to utilize McGuffie. Hope he comes back but it doesn't sound so good.

Posted by trollerrific on 11/20/08 at 5:09PM

taterrific2, You finally went too far. I can not believe you want to "take a guy out at the knees". Have you ever played? Don't waste time replying because we all know...I'm a troll.

Posted by KyUMfan on 11/20/08 at 5:09PM

I must comment on this. I just watched the Jim Rome Show and they started talking about, guess what, Michigan and RR. I can't quote word-for-word but one of the guests stated: "The only reason RR hasn't been run out of town is that he isn't as bad as Matt Millen, yet!" WOW!!! He also said that he had the audacity to go "3-8" after having Michigan pay "2.5 million" to WVU! I wish I could transcript the whole conversation.

Jim also had Tom Izzo on the the show and the conversation glowed in a green a white halo. Who is the B-ball coach for Michigan right now? It has been so long that I cared I can't remember. I hope we have stopped playing Duke on national television. That was BEYOND embarrassment.

    Posted by gobucks1071 on 11/20/08 at 5:27PM

    Tater,

The reason Tressel started using Pryor had nothing to do with accelerating his growth and everything to do with the fact that our offensive line was playing just this side of terrible. Pryor is mobile and Boeckman is not. And I think if you go back and watch the Ohio University game and the USC game, you can see that Boeckman's play had dropped off in a big way from last year. Since the switch to Pryor we've put up more points, with the exception of the Penn State game.
As far as Tressel being conservative, he plays to his strengths. In 2002 we had Clarett, Nugent, and a dominating defense, so we ran the ball, played good defense and won close games. In 2006, he had Troy Smith, Ginn, and Gonzales, so we operated a spread formation offense and scored a lot of points. This year, with Pryor in the game, we run several different formations and have added the option. He's played it conservatively to give Pryor a chance to get comfortable and to rely on Beanie Wells and the defense. I'm sure next year we'll spread people out and run the offense you so desperately want to see succeed at Michigan. Only we'll do it well.

Posted by KyUMfan on 11/20/08 at 5:42PM

goBucks....A concise way to state that OSU played to its strengths versus forcing a bad position. Playing Pryor now was looking to the future and dreaded USC instead of beating your head against a wall and losing badly. They could be playing them in Rose Bowl for third time in two years. Boekman is good but wasn't putting them over the top. Tater understands the concept very well. Not only did OSU start retooling, they have been winning easily except for the PSU game which you pointed out. They have a freshman QB gaining valuable experience to win multiple Big Ten Championships. A cold but appropriate decision.

Posted by uminks on 11/20/08 at 6:15PM

Sorry, I was at work and missed the lunch talk but I noticed that a troll predicted OSU 38 UM 0 for me!

I don't think it will be that bad, but OSU will probably win 34-20...but I think it could be close at half time through the 3rd QTR.

When ever you have a running QB, he will always have the potential to be injured. I hope TP doesn't go down but there is always that potential. That's why I sure hope we get both Fourcier and Beaver as QBs next year, just in case one of them goes down the other will be very capable to lead the team.

Posted by bakrman on 11/20/08 at 6:38PM

You all know McGuffie is GONE! RR better spend the time between Nov. 23 and New Year's Day recriuiting wisely. He sure doesn't have much else to do!

Posted by KyUMfan on 11/20/08 at 6:54PM

"Get a life" Hmmmmm. Are these not the comments of a CEO? He has already sacrificed this season and found 51 percent of the UM nation to believe in him.

Posted by GoBlueGoWing on 11/20/08 at 6:56PM

tosu down by 5, 5 seconds left, ball on mich 20, pryor runs, UM can't get him of course easy score right?, pryor to the one falls down on his own. UM wins pryor goes to Meeeechigan next year.
If the score in under 20 I will take it
THIS YEAR BETTER BE WORTH IT

He is not going anywhere, move on people.

    Posted by azwolverine1 on 11/20/08 at 8:20PM

Let's get this straight right off the bat. I can't stand Jim Tressel, he's smug and smarmy and, let's face it, being the coach of OSU makes him evil.
However, for anyone to say RR is a better coach is beyond ridicuous. Based on what? There are absolutely no FACTS that back that argument. Zero. Zilch. None. Quite the contrary, actually.
RR has a career record of 108-70, while Tressel has a career record of 217-75-2. That's 109 more wins vs. only 5 more losses. Tressel has 3 losing seasons in 23 years, while RR has 5 in only 16. Tressel has 5 national titles while playing in 7 title games, an average of playing for the title almost once every 3 years. RR has ZERO titles and lost to Pitt when he was on the doorstep.
At least when Tressel lost, his teams lost to outstanding teams, not (the) Pitt(s).
Tressel has 12 10 + win seasons (13 this weekend?) to RR's 4. Tressel has TWO 14-0 seasons. Looking at RR's record, his only truly good seasons were those 4 10-11 win seasons. The rest of his career has ranged from mediocre to awful (see this season at Michigan).
No, while it is truly unfortunate, RR is nowhere near as good as Tressel. In fact, the only argument that could be made for him is that he innovated the spread. Big deal. It's not getting him the same results Tressel is getting using a variety of attacks, including the spread. And, let's be honest, Tressel has done it against much better competition his entire career.
To say RR is better than Tressel is laughable, let's hope that those who say it are joking. Otherwise, nothing they say holds any credence.

Posted by Lemansblue on 11/20/08 at 8:30PM

Maybe McGuffie heard what Desmond said it would be 5 years before NC game, problem is Sam only has 3 years left.
