Hipsters Underground retail store and events space opens on South State

By Lizzy Alfs

A retail shop and events space named Hipsters Underground opened on Ann Arbor's South State Street near the University of Michigan's campus in June, Concentrate Media reports.

The 1,500-square-foot store, located at 324 S. State St. near Espresso Royale and Noodles & Company, sells handmade and eco-friendly goods.

“Not only do we have great deals on artisan made goods, but we also feature great pieces from local artists on our walls,” Hipsters Underground’s website says.

Product offerings include clothes, accessories, sunglasses, ukuleles, candles and bath products, among other items.

In addition to the retail side of the business, Hipsters Underground manager Bhen Jachimiak hosts social events every Friday night, including open mic nights and poetry readings.

The shop’s hours are: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Yeah, anything located in or near sterile, high-rent downtown Ann Arbor is by definition NOT hipster.

What version of hipster does this store cater to? Urban-lumberjack? Pseudo-Euro-trash? Fixie-bike-rolled-up-pantleg? We totes need more deets.

I'm sure they sell skinny jeans but do they sell 'staches too?

If they don't have Three-wolf-moon shirts, they're dead in the water.

I agree it's a terrible idea for a name. "Hipsters" will avoid it on principle, everybody else will just feel alienated by it. Obviously owners have no idea what a hipster is.

Pretty sure that anyone who says they're a hipster doesn't qualify.

It's true. The mark of a real hipster is that they deny being one, and make fun of them constantly. It's a powerful version of denial and transference. Very sad actually.

I don't think the article mentions if the store is locally owned or a corporate franchise...?

There are already a ton of corporate hipster clothing-troughs: American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, H&M, etc. Hipsters got their versions of Hot Topic long long ago.

Except that the irony would ATTRACT hipsters. I think I just divided by zero.

Hipster franchise. The irony would be staggering.

Wow, they are actually calling the store that? They've already formed the basis for an effective boycott based upon the name alone. I give it 2 months.

This is a joke right? Reminds me of this: http://www.fastcodesign.com/1673156/create-your-own-hipster-logo-in-6-steps#1

The hipsters won't go there. Too mainstream, man.

I'll have to check this out as the products sound interesting. Maybe I can finally figure out what a hipster is, unless, of course, I get kicked out for being the antithesis of one.

I didn't get kicked out. Some cool reused items. Not a lot of inventory though. They do have the cutest, friendliest dog ever.

Perhaps the worst name for a business ever.

Add "Turkey Hill" ice cream to the list. The visual picture is just not appetizing!
