Max & Erma's restaurant launches free cookie days

By Nathan Bomey

Max & Erma's plans to give away free chocolate chip cookies at Michigan restaurants — including its Ann Arbor location — on Wednesdays.

Customers who buy any food item will receive two free cookies on Wednesdays "until, well, Erma gets tired of baking or runs out of cookie dough," the company said in a statement.

The free cookies push is part of a marketing trend in which restaurants give away their signature products for free or cheaply in an effort to generate publicity and broaden their customer base. For example, Jimmy John's has drawn huge crowds with its $1 sub days, and Ben & Jerry's hosts an annual "free cone day."

Max & Erma operates a company-owned restaurant on Eisenhower Parkway on the first floor of a building that also houses Olive Garden.

The company described the promotion as an expansion of an initiative that started in the Pittsburgh market, where some restaurants have been giving away 4,000 cookies a day.

“Guests tell us that Erma’s Fresh-baked Cookies really are special, but we had no idea that when we started giving them away on Wednesdays, people would get so excited,” said Steve Weis, Max & Erma’s vice president of operations, in a statement. “It’s amazing how a free cookie, hot out of the oven, can put a smile on anybody’s face.”

Yes, it is a bit of an info-merrcial. Everybody needs to service their customers. M & E's is an old menu. Needs updating. It appeals to parents of college students. Giving away cookies isn't cheap. One can expect that is a profitable item. As to service that's a traing problem along with keeping a wait staff with sufficent business for the good ones to make money. A minor revolution in the business model might invigorate M & E. Employee turn-over in the in the back of the house & front of the house is another problem. Mid-range restaurants just below the white table class is a difficult business model. Lots of competition. Balancing employee costs with customer attendance is a guessing game backed by previous experience. Some days the customers just don't follow the usual pattern creating a slow kitchen & a problem for the wait staff. I don't work for them - I did a long time ago. They are still studying what they need to do to make the chain & franchise store more profitable.

This is how they get people to come there? Geez. I was there a few weeks ago and the experience was horrible. The food was cold but overcooked. The server forgot to bring our soups out. We never got anything to drink until dinner came. It was awful. I hope the server figured it out, too. Yeah, that was my lousy tip...for less than acceptable service. I waited 17 minutes for her to come back with my credit card. Free cookie or not....you won't see me there ever again.

Give away free French fries, or bacon, and I'll get excited. Cookies? Meh.

This is an ad, not a news story, and has no place as a story. If AA.com gives away free product promotion masquerading as a story, why should anyone by an ad?

Yeah, sweet but, at an estimated 370 calories, 49 grams of carbohydrate, and 19 grams of fat for ONE cookie (see http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/max-and-ermas/chocolate-chip-cookie ), in my opinion Max & Erma's is not doing their patrons any favors.
