The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:
• Populist Cleaning Co. announced Sept. 20 that Karl R. McAllister was promoted to assistant operations manager. McAllister will supervise and schedule nightly cleaning crews as well as crews for carpet cleaning and tile floor maintenance, hire new employees and assist in conducting routine relationship reviews with current customers.
• Susan M. Kornfield, a partner in the Ann Arbor office of law firm Bodman LLP, was one of 20 attorneys statewide chosen to receive the 2010 “Michigan Women in the Law” award sponsored by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Kornfield and the other winners were honored at a lunch held on Sept. 16 at the Troy Marriott. In other news from Bodman, Christopher A. Ballard, a partner in the Ann Arbor office, was named chair of the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan on Sept. 16.
• The Healthcare Leadership Council honored Congressman John D. Dingell, D-Mich., with its “Champion of Healthcare Innovation” award on Sept. 28. The congressman, who is the author of the House health reform bill, was selected for his ongoing support of patient-centered medical progress.
• Ann Arbor's eBay store, Encore Online Resale, moved and expanded in July. Formerly located in the Colonnade Shopping Center, the business is now located at 1958 S. Industrial Drive in the Colonial Lanes Plaza, and the new store is 2,400 square feet, up from 1,700 square feet in the former location.
• Ann Arbor-based Association Management Resources earned a statewide award at the Michigan Society of Association Executives’ ninth annual Diamond Awards program on Sept. 22 in Birmingham. The awards program recognized excellence and innovation in associations. The AMR’s Michigan Joint Education Conference, established in 2007, received first place in the "innovative collaboration" category. During the one-day conference for elementary and secondary school educators, five Michigan associations join to discuss integrated education, curriculum and instruction for the multi-faceted educator. The associations are the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning, Michigan Association of Middle School Educators, Michigan Council for the Social Studies, Michigan Council of Teachers in Mathematics and the Michigan Science Teachers Association.
• Kramer-Triad Management Group, an Associa company with offices in southeast MIchigan, including one in Ann Arbor, recently announced the creation of the Associa OnCall program to assist individual homeowners with repairs and maintenance. Associa OnCall is a handyman program that is designed to provide reasonably priced, trained technicians who will perform repairs and maintenance for individual homeowners, whether the community is managed by Kramer-Triad or not. The new program offers homeowner services that are not currently covered by their community association such as interior painting, drywall repairs, power washing, sump pump replacement, door and window repairs and general handyman services.
• Two Ann Arbor-area companies, Adaptive Materials and ReCellular were announced as winners of 2010 GLITR awards. The awards are presented to Michigan-based companies and individuals for outstanding performance in rebuilding the state's economy. The awards were handed out at WWJ Newsradio 950's business conference, "Igniting Innovation In Michigan: Entrepreneurs In Action," on Sept. Breakaway Company of the Year went to Adaptive Materials for their growth in supplying working fuel cells to the government and, increasingly, to commercial buyers. Green Company of the Year went to ReCellular Inc. of Dexter, a zero-landfill company that keeps millions of cell phones out of landfills by recycling or refurbishing them.
• The SOS board of directors has appointed Faye Askew-King as executive director. Askew-King, former program and services director for the Ypsilanti nonprofit, has been the interim executive director for the past several months, and that appointment is now permanent. Since she came to SOS in 1993, Askew-King has expanded all of SOS’s programs for children, including the introduction of the Early Risers research-based prevention program and two nationally-recognized children’s programs. She also created the SOS Consumer Advisory Board, expanded SOS’s employability support services and initiated a Women’s Leadership Training for homeless mothers. In related news, SOS recently announced that its website has been updated. Askew-King said the new website makes it easier for people to learn about services for preventing family homelessness and find ways they can help. The website was designed by Invisible Engines, a local design firm based in Ypsilanti.
• An Eastern Michigan University professor has been honored as the state’s top college educator in accounting by the Michigan Association of CPAs. Daniel Brickner, a professor in Eastern’s College of Business, is this year’s recipient of the association’s annual Accounting Teaching Excellence Award. The winner is chosen from nominees at community colleges, colleges and universities in Michigan who have made contributions to the education of accounting students.
• Fustini’s Oils & Vinegars has a new location on the second floor of the Kerrytown Shops, 407 N. 5th Ave. Futstini's other locations are in Holland, Petoskey and Traverse City.
• Ann Arbor-based Arbor Hospice celebrated the grand opening of its new office in Monroe with an open house event on Wed. Sept 29.
• Exercise Warehouse, with its original showroom based in Livonia, recently opened a new location in Ann Arbor, at 3933 Jackson Road.
• National intellectual property law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione was included in the new U.S. News & World Reports’ Best Lawyers top national law firms list. The October 2010 issue ranks firms in 39 practice area,s and Brinks was named in the category of Intellectual Property Law. It is the only firm listed in the Intellectual Property category that has a Michigan office. The Brinks’ Michigan office, located in Ann Arbor, is led by attorney Steven L. Oberholtzer.
• Balance Massage Therapy of Ann Arbor will celebrate its two-year anniversary Oct. 11. Balance is also offering its "Grand Opening Pricing" sale for three days, Oct. 11 to 13, to celebrate. The company plans to expand its business in the coming year with an oncology massage program and an on-site chair massage service for local businesses.
• The Commercial Board of Realtors- Michigan recently announced that CBOR's 2010 Realtor of the Year has been given to Mark Woods, a realtor with Signature Associates. Woods will be honored at CBOR's annual general membership meeting on Oct. 27 in Howell.
• From 8 to 11 a.m. tomorrow, the new Passport restaurant on south State Street will celebrate its grand opening. Local celebrity Lucy Ann Lance will be broadcasting The Lucy Ann Lance Business Insider live, starting at 8 a.m. Also, two stars from the new movie “Answer This!” which debuts at the Michigan Theater tonight, will be joining the festivities at Passport: Chris Gorham (Henry on "Ugly Betty" and the blind operative on "Covert Affairs") and Arielle Kebbel.
• The Charles Reinhart Co., a real estate firm based in Ann Arbor, recently announced that Megan Crosbie was named marketing coordinator and will primarily be responsible for Reinhart’s online presence, including the social media strategy, website and blog. Crosbie previously worked at the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber as the marketing and membership coordinator.
• The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum was recently awarded a $35,000 grant to provide financial a-sistance to schools through the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum’s “Discover Science Assistance Fund.” The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, made the grant award.The Discover Science Assistance Fund provides reduced museum admission to schools and supports a reduced-fee lab to compliment a field trip. Labs at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum deliver a 45-minute, instructor-led, hands-on activity on a science subject selected by the teacher.
• Milan Public Library received four grants for a total of $2,400 from The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation, and these grants will be used to purchase audiobooks, nonfiction DVDs, large print books and nonfiction youth DVDs. The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation announced the grants after the foundation’s board of directors approved the grants on Aug. 25.
• Washtenaw County Public Health and Huron Valley Ambulance will host Washtenaw County’s third annual drive-through flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at Huron Valley Ambulance, 1200 State Circle in Ann Arbor. At this year’s clinic, after visitors get their shots, they will receive a trick or treat goodie bag and a map to neighboring south side businesses. Visitors to those businesses can get a free car wash, collect stickers for chances to win a flat screen TV and other prizes and let the kids go “trick or treating.”
• Volunteers at Ann Arbor GiveCamp provided new websites or web applications for free to 13 charitable organizations in southeastern Michigan, including Hope Clinic International, Leslie Science and Nature Center, Red Beard Press and Talkin’ Proper, all based in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor GiveCamp, held Sept. 17 through 19 at Washtenaw Community College, is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for nonprofit organizations.
• Ann Arbor-based Borders Group Inc.has earned a 100 percent rating on the 2011 Corporate Equality Index, an annual survey published by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. This marks the sixth time — and the fourth consecutive year — the company has achieved a perfect score on the CEI since it was first published in 2002.
• The University of Michigan Medical School will establish a joint institute with the Peking University Health Science Center in an effort to promote research that can lead to breakthroughs in pulmonary, cardiovascular and liver diseases. The joint institute will feature collaborative research efforts, exchanges of faculty, medical residents, fellows and other researchers, and completion of large-scale clinical trials. The joint institute will be launched on Oct. 12 in an opening ceremony at the Biomedical Sciences Research Building on the Medical School campus at 1:30 p.m.. Leadership from both universities will sign the agreement, and the first joint symposium will facilitate discussion on the joint research projects.
