• Edward Shaffran, owner of the Ann Arbor-based real estate firm The Shaffran Companies Ltd., recently received an MBA Leadership Award from Cleary University. The MBA Leadership Award is presented to the MBA student who best demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities during the completion of the graduate degree program.
• Ann Arbor biotech startup Lycera has hired Bill Sibold, the former senior vice president of U.S. commercial business at Biogen, as its new CEO. In related news, Lycera also plans to move its headquarters to Cambridge, Mass.
• Hobbs+Black Associates Inc., headquartered in Ann Arbor, was selected by Mid Michigan Community College to design a proposed expansion to the MMCC Doan Center to relocate the existing student services and college bookstore functions. Mid Michigan Community College has campuses in Harrison and Mt. Pleasant
• U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow on Jan. 6 announced more than $5 million in funding for clean energy jobs training in Southeast Michigan. The funds from the U.S. Department of Labor were made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Energy Training Partnership grant awards. The Regional Energy Efficiency Partnership Training Program in Wayne County will receive $4,298,673. The International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry will receive $4,995,188 for work in seven states including Michigan. The International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry’s program will include work in Detroit, Livonia, Ann Arbor, Warren and Wayne. The program will prepare the unemployed and incumbent sheet metal workforce for careers in energy efficient building construction, retrofitting and manufacturing.
• Ann Arbor-based Logic Solutions Inc. hired four new staff members in December: Ron Bica of Canton, senior account executive; Marc Bittner of Ann Arbor, senior systems administrator; Angela Kujava of Ann Arbor, marketing director; and David Owens of Ann Arbor, senior account executive.
• The board of directors for Detroit law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP recently announced it has elected 12 attorneys as new partners in the firm effective Jan. 1. Among the new partners is Richard D. Hoeg, a partner in the corporate and securities department in the firm's Ann Arbor office.
• The Main Street Area Association recently held board elections. Reelected were: Chris DeRuyver, Affinity Wealth Solutions; Jill Damon, 16 Hands; and Sue Burke, Mainstreet Ventures. Newly elected is Nancy Shore, getDowntown.
• Ann Arbor State Bank celebrates its first full year in business Jan. 14. In the first year, the Ann Arbor State Bank served more than 1,000 new customers and closed more than120 mortgages. In addition, total loans for the first year for the bank exceeded $90 million and more than $55 million in deposits and certificates of deposits, ranking the Ann Arbor State Bank as one of the five fastest growing new banks in the country.
• A print created by Jill Love of J. Love Photography in Dexter recently was accepted into the Loan Collection of Professional Photographers of America's 2009 International Print Competition. Love's work was on display at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Jan. 10-12 in Nashville, Tenn. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention of professional photographers and several photographic associations.
• Diane Keller became president of the newly-merged Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber on Jan. 1. She has been president of the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce since June 2007.
• Habitat for Humanity at the University of Michigan and the local Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley will host a dedication at 3 p.m. Jan. 24 celebrate a local family's purchase of a newly-renovated home in Ypsilanti. Sponsors of the home include HFHUM and State Farm. A State Farm $10,000 matching grant will be directed to the local Habitat affiliate in spring 2010 upon HFHUM students fulfilling their commitment of a $10,000 match. Habitat will use the funds raised by HFHUM and the State Farm matching grant to renovate the Ypsilanti home.
• Tecumseh Products Co., a manufacturer of compressors and related products headquartered in Ann Arbor, announced Jan. 8 that James J. Connor has been named vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer.
• Ann Arbor-based The Linux Box is partnering with Opsera Limited to become an official reseller of Opsview, a network and infrastructure monitoring software suite. Opsview enables IT managers to identify and fix issues with their systems before they impact system availability.
• Dr. Raymond Fabius was appointed chief medical officer of Thomson Reuter's Healthcare & Science business. Thomson Reuters is headquartered in Ann Arbor.
• Ann Arbor's Advanced Photonix Inc. announced Jan. 7 that its subsidiary, Picometrix LLC, has entered into a contract from the Air Force to develop a prototype terahertz quality control system. The system will be based on the patented fiber-coupled T-Ray 4000 instrument and used to ensure the proper fit of the coated exterior surfaces of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, which has been developed for the U.S. Department of Defense.
