The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:
• Ann Arbor's Balance Massage Therapy announced April 20 the addition of Amy Draybuck to its team as business development manager. In her new position, Draybuck will oversee marketing and community involvement efforts as well as administrative operations. She also will assist with the development and growth of Balance-In-Motion, Balance's on-site chair-massage division.
• Ann Arbor-based Beal Inc. recently announced several new hires: David Pilon was named chief financial officer, Mary Kaplan was named human resources director, Doug Wood was named marketing coordinator, and Brian O'Donnell and Ed Ramp were named project managers. Beal Inc. provides a range of demolition contracting and construction trade services to clients throughout the Midwest.
• The University of Michigan's Sharon Glotzer and Scott Page have been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a society that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in scholarly and professional fields. They are among 212 new fellows and 16 foreign honorary members, including scholars, scientists, writers, artists and civic, corporate and philanthropic leaders. Glotzer, the Stuart W. Churchill Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering at U-M, conducts research in the areas of computational nanoscience and simulation of soft matter, self-assembly and materials design. Page, the Leonid Hurwicz Collegiate Professor of Complex Systems, Political Science, and Economics, is the principal investigator for two large projects funded by the National Science Foundation: the IDEAS IGERT grant and Project SLUCE, a biocomplexity grant. The new class of fellows will be inducted at a ceremony Oct. 1 at the academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
• Internet television station WDEE-TV (formerly A2YP.TV) of Dark Elf Entertainment and Media is teaming up with Ann Arbor’s Wild Swan Theater. WDEE TV will be using space in Wild Swan’s Ann Arbor head-quarters location to consistently film some of its regular television programming.
• Stephen K. Krull was recently named the new executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Ann Arbor-based Con-way Inc. In other news from Con-way Inc., the American Red Cross of Washtenaw County received a $50,000 contribution in mid-April from the company and its employees for the Japan Earthquake Relief Efforts. Con-way employees nationwide participated in a campaign to raise relief donations, which netted close to $25,000. The company then pitched in with a matching corporate contribution of $25,000. A check was presented to the American Red Cross of Washtenaw County during a ceremony at Con-way’s corporate headquarters in Ann Arbor.
• The National Multi Housing Council recently announced that Ann Arbor-based McKinley is the 38th largest U.S. apartment manager as of Jan. 1, up from 45th place in the previous year's rankings.
• United Bank & Trust recently announced Dale Chadderdon as the recipient of its 2010 Merlyn H. Downing Co-worker of the Year award and Kristi Harvey as the recipient of its 2010 CoWorker Volunteer of the Year award. Chadderdon, senior vice president of finance with United Bank & Trust, was the 21st recipient of the award, which recognizes co-workers who consistently perform above and beyond what their positions require. Chadderdon was honored for his teamwork, dedication, leadership, professionalism and over 34 years of service with United. Harvey, administrative assistant with United’s wealth management group, is the 15th recipient of the volunteer award, which was created to honor United co-workers whose volunteer efforts exemplify dedication to the well-being of their local communities. She was recognized for her ongoing work in becoming certified as an American Red Cross volunteer in their disaster relief program. Additionally, she organizes United’s annual Adopt-A-Family program, is a first responder to administer CPR and first aid in the workplace and was instrumental in organizing a blood drive at the company's office in Ann Arbor. United Bank & Trust is a local financial services company that operates 16 banking offices in Lenawee, Washtenaw and Monroe counties.
• Randall Book, a real estate executive with more than two decades of industry experience, has joined Colliers International’s Detroit regional office as senior vice president. Book, who brings his three-person team to Colliers International, will spearhead tenant representation assignments for both the Detroit and Ann Arbor offices. He will continue to be based in Detroit.
• Affinia Group Inc., a provider of industrial grade products and services headquartered in Ann Arbor, has begun production at its new filtration products manufacturing facility in Longkou City, Shandong Province, China. Longkou WIX Filtration Co. Ltd. will serve Asian markets and represent an expansion of Affinia's existing business relationship with Zhang Haibo, President of Haimeng, one of the largest drum and rotor manufacturers in the world.
