From new hires and promotions to industry awards, here's a roundup of achievements by businesses and individuals in the greater Ann Arbor area:
• Detroit-based Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP recently announced that David N. Parsigian was elected to the firm’s board of directors for a four-year term. He is the office managing partner of Honigman’s Ann Arbor office, a partner in the firm’s corporate department and leader of its venture capital practice group. He is one of 13 board members.
• The Independent Community Bankers of America in early July released the Top 50 Community Bank Leaders in Social Media and the Top 20 Community Banker Influencers on Twitter. Bank of Ann Arbor was featured on the Community Bank list in the number two position. Tim Marshall, president and CEO, and Matthew Altruda, social media and event coordinator, were also named to the Top 20 Community Bankers list.
• The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan recently announced that nearly $12.4 million in grants were approved to nonprofit organizations. Locally, the Ann Arbor Teen Center and Regents of the University of Michigan were among the recipients. The Ann Arbor Teen Center received $18,000 to support an academic and workforce development program for teens called SCORE (School Career Opportunities aRe Endless), helping young people to secure employment, develop a post-secondary education plan and transition to adulthood. The Regents of the University of Michigan was granted $50,000 to support a pediatric food allergy and nutrition education and counseling program at the University of Michigan Food Allergy Center, aimed at low-income families.
• The Chelsea Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, has awarded $7,000 to the Fair Food Network to expand their Double UP Food Bucks program to the Chelsea Farmer's Market.
• Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan was recently the recipient of a $2,000 grant from the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor to support PPMSM’s Peer Education Program. The PPMSM Peer Education Program trains selected teens to become experts in sexual health so that accurate information is shared among teens. PPMSM peer educators serve as non-judgmental resources in their schools and local communities. Peer educators also provide formal presentations to local schools, community groups, parent groups and youth groups.
• Starting Friday, July 5, Bill’s Beer Garden has expanded its hours and will be open six days a week: 5-11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 4-9 p.m. Sunday, each week through Oct. 31.
• In June, Ann Arbor-based Golden Limousine International added two new vehicles to their fleet. The luxury coaches are the latest model coach from Grech Motors, and the GM40 Ford is built on a Ford F650 commercial chassis.
• Schiff Hardin LLP recently announced that New York City-based Mazur Carp & Rubin P.C. combined its law practice with Schiff Hardin's law practice on July 1 and will operate under the name Schiff Hardin LLP. Mazur Carp & Rubin's 11 attorneys plus staff have joined Schiff Hardin's New York office, the second-largest office in its nationwide network. Schiff Hardin now totals almost 400 attorneys across the firm's seven offices located throughout the United States, including an office in Ann Arbor.
• RingSide Creative has merged its production operations division with Jeff Moon Production Services Inc. to form subsidiary, Moonlink Studios LLC. Moonlink Studios is now the largest single source provider of production related services in Michigan. Robin Tracey and Jeff Moon have been named co-managing directors to oversee daily operations. While Moonlink Satellite, Inc. remains independently owned by Moon, its services will continue to be integrated with Moonlink Studios LLC. Moonlink Studios offers sound stages, live shot studios, crew, and camera/equipment packages, with three live shot studios located in Detroit, Southfield and Ann Arbor.
• The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued more patents to Toyota's designers and engineers in 2012 than to any other automaker, according to a recently-released survey by the Intellectual Property Owners Association. The total for the year was 1,491 patents. The Toyota Technical Center, located in Ann Arbor and Saline, recently held their annual patent awards ceremony to honor last year's patent recipients. Two team members each received their 20th patent in 2012, Minjuan Zhang, manager, Toyota Research Institute NA, and Charan Lota, manager, electronic systems at Toyota Technical Center.
• The United Way of Washtenaw County hosted a "Community Baby Shower" as part of its May Days of Caring charity program. SOS Community Services, Hope Clinic, The Corner Health Center and Child Care Network were the recipients of 970 diapers, 600 items of clothing, 18 bottles, toys, medicines, lotions, shampoo and other items valued at more than $9,400.
• Ann Arbor-based Park n Party announced that it will expand its services for the third year in a row. Park n Party, through www.parknparty.com, offers parking lot owners and event-goers an online marketplace. Lot owners can make their parking and tailgating spaces and other amenities available to event goers who want to reserve spots before the big game or other event. Through a partnership with the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority and Republic Parking, Park n Party will offer Art Fair visitors downtown parking solutions July 17-20 for less than $18 a day.
• Ann Arbor-based Huron Valley Ambulance May 21 honored the recipients of its Emergency Medical Services Recognition Awards. HVA presented its Life Saving Award to four police officers from the Ann Arbor Police Department for their rescue of several residents from an apartment building fire: Roman Morrow, David Ried, Jeffrey Shafer and Peter Tsangaris. The HeartSafe Award was presented to the Great Lakes Science Center for having AEDs in their building, on all boats and taken on all field work; having personnel trained in CPR and AED use available in all environments; and regularly practicing cardiac arrest protocols for cardiac emergencies in all environments. HVA also honored five full-time employees from several company divisions who were serving as this year's Stars of Life. They are: Paramedic Brad Vanderlooven from Western Operations; EMT Ernie Cameron from Eastern Operations; Administrative Assistant Kristen Collins from Support Operations; Patient Accounts Representative Alicia Keaton from Administration; and Ann Arbor resident and paramedic Eric Marshall from Central Operations. The "Stars" were selected by management from a pool of applicants who received "exceeds standards" performance appraisals in the past year. Additionally, paramedics celebrating 25 years with the company were honored: Russ Comfort, Jennifer DeVoe and Chuck Rork.
