From new hires and promotions to industry awards, here's a roundup of achievements by businesses and individuals in the greater Ann Arbor area:
• Schiff Hardin/Ann Arbor partner Gregory L. Curtner has been ranked as a national leader in sports law by Chambers USA. Curtner has many decades of experience representing athletic equipment manufacturers, sports associations and academic athletics programs. Schiff Hardin LLP is a general practice law firm with offices in Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Lake Forest, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
• A select group of Michigan small-business leaders were invited to the White House on June 1 to participate in a forum discussing ideas to stimulate job growth and Michigan’s economy, held in conjunction with the White House Business Council and Business Forward. Saline Lectronics Inc. was one of the Michigan companies chosen to participate in the council. CEO and president Mario Sciberras and owner Matt Turner were present at the forum on behalf of Saline. Saline Lectronics is a contract manufacturing firm specializing in printed circuit board assemblies.
• The public is invited to an open house from 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 to view recent renovations to the University of Michigan’s Orthotics and Prosthetics Center. The O&P center has undergone $1.2 million in renovations that have nearly doubled the facility’s patient care space, enhanced waiting rooms, provided accommodations for the U-M amputee support network and expanded therapy capacity. During the open house, the public is invited tour the facility. The open house will also include giveaways and food. The center is located in the Eisenhower Plaza, 2850 S. • Erin Sabo has been named managing director of Performance Network Theatre, based in Ann Arbor. Performance Network Theatre has been in the process of restructuring their nonprofit organization; with the appointment of Sabo as the managing director, PNT staff say this will allow the theater to adopt the dual management structure that is the industry standard for producing professional theater, as well as expand its artistic programs. Sabo will join Artistic Director David Wolber in leading the organization, allowing former executive director Carla Milarch to move to the artistic leadership team as the associate artistic director.
• The fourth annual TechTwilight, a fundraising event held in May to benefit the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, raised nearly $35,000. The event supports upgrades to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum’s technology exhibits and provides funds for a new, interactive two-story air rocket exhibit, which will debut in late 2012. TechTwilight featured technology displays from 39 sponsors and 24 companies from throughout the region. Exhibitors included TechTwilight “Best of Show” award winner and event sponsor NuStep, which offered a boot camp on its exercise equipment. Also exhibited at TechTwilight was a custom video game created by Ann Arbor-based SRT Solutions and interactive marquee displays by the Toyota Technical Center, TorranceLearning, Bank of Ann Arbor, NSF International and Ultra Electronics, AMI.
• The University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is among the best children’s hospitals in the country in pediatric specialties and is the only hospital in Michigan ranked in all 10 specialties evaluated, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. The new rankings recognize the top 50 children’s hospitals in each of 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. Eighty hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
• The University of Michigan Office of University Development has named Dondi Cupp as the new associate vice president.
• On May 30, Thomas M. Cooley Law School’s Ann Arbor campus hosted 14 Ypsilanti High School students as part of the “A Woman’s Worth” mentoring group. This mentoring group pairs Ypsilanti High School students with Cooley Law School students, whose focus is to educate and encourage young women about their worth. Students toured the campus and participated in Professor Alan Gershel’s Criminal Procedure class. Cooley law student Tamaris Henagan-Sprow gave a motivational speech, and before leaving campus, the students signed a pledge to strive for excellence in their lives. The Thomas M. Cooley Law School is a private, nonprofit, independent law school, offering its juris doctor program, joint degree programs, and master of laws programs at campuses across Michigan in Lansing, Auburn Hills, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, and its new campus in Tampa Bay, Fla.
• From 2-6 p.m. June 24, Anna Belle Salon, 897 W. Eisenhower Parkway in Ann Arbor, will host “Cuts for a Cause,” with all proceeds donated to the Susan G. Komen Mid-Michigan Ride for a Cure.
• The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor recently made grants to 11 area nonprofit organizations totaling $45,000. This year, the club received requests for over $230,000 from 57 area nonprofit organizations. The following will receive funding: Ozone House Youth and Family Services, Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad, SafeHouse Center, Peace Neighborhood Center, Neutral Zone’s SCORE Program (School, Career, Opportunities aRe Endless), ENL Nuestra Lengua Literacy and Culture Project, SOS Community Services, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Washtenaw County (Alpha House), Corner Health Center, The Family Learning Institute and Washtenaw Area Council for Children.
• Lawyers from around the world will be in Ann Arbor Thursday, June 14 through Saturday, June 16 to attend the LEGUS International Network of Law Firms Annual Conference. Headquartered in Ann Arbor, LEGUS was founded to help mid-size law firms compete in the world market. LEGUS is an exclusive network that only allows one law firm member per jurisdiction, and prospective member law firms are inspected by a panel of current LEGUS members for quality of work, staff and reputation.
• Sapphire Energy, Inc. on June 12 welcomed new members to its scientific advisory board. Among the new members joining the board is H. Scott Fogler, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
• ForeSee, an Ann Arbor-based company specializing in customer experience analytics, recently announced that it is working with the Virginia Lottery. ForeSee will measure and analyze the customer experience on the lottery's mobile site and traditional website.
• The U-Haul Company of Central Michigan June 6 announced the acquisition of Acorn Attic Self Storage, an existing storage facility located at 2225 Parkwood Ave. in Ypsilanti. This new acquisition has been renamed U-Haul Moving and Storage of Ypsilanti.
• Ann Arbor social media agency Ingenex Digital Marketing recently expanded its team with the hiring of Erin K. O’Neill as content producer and Lauren Schneider as account coordinator.
