Art and clothing store to open in basement of Bead Gallery shop in downtown Ann Arbor

By Lizzy Alfs

Two young entrepreneurs who recently moved from New York to Ann Arbor plan to open an art and clothing store in the basement of the Bead Gallery building at 309 E. Liberty St. in downtown Ann Arbor.

The store, Avtomobile, will open on July 22 with a store launch party, said owners Sara Renner and Maris Turner.

Renner and Turner are subleasing a portion of the basement on a monthly basis from the Bead Gallery, which occupies the first and second floors of the building. Julie VanDyke, owner of the Bead Gallery, estimated Avtomobile occupies 700 square feet in the basement.

Avtomobile will carry a small collection of art, clothing and accessories, which are mostly vintage and have been handpicked by the owners. Nearly everything in the store will be less than $50, Turner said.

“This store is very refined to our tastes,” Turner said. “We picked out everything in here and thought it would fit into our brand and our idea.”

Renner, an aspiring fashion designer, will be altering and making some of the clothing in the store, while Turner, a graphic designer, will make graphics for the tees and paint labels for the clothing.

The clothing selection consists of mostly shirts that are either true vintage, slightly altered or handmade by Renner.

Turner said they hope to expand the Avtomobile brand, with a goal to eventually carry only their personal brand in the store.

The clothing in Avtomobile is either true vintage, altered or handmade by co-owner Sara Renner.

After working in the arts sector in New York, Renner and Turner decided to combine their talents and open a store in Ann Arbor.

Turner, who grew up in Chelsea, said he missed the Ann Arbor area and thought an art and clothing store would do well downtown.

“This is such a cool town,” Turner said. “Ann Arbor really has it figured out and everyone I talk to speaks really highly of it.”

When looking for a store location, they came across the Bead Gallery basement and thought it would be a good starting point.

“It’s just a cool location,” Renner said. “We ripped up the floor, but we liked how it was dark and like a cave with the exposed rock on the walls.”

Bead Gallery owner VanDyke said the two businesses share a similar vision and she thinks sharing a space with Avtomobile will be a “really great fit.”

I've been walking by the store for a week and waiting for its opening. The clothing and make up of the store look really creative and arty. These people have something really good going. Ann Arbor needs a place like this. Really like what I've seen. Check it out.
