Work on an underground pipe on Maynard Street outside downtown Ann Arbor’s Nickels Arcade has temporarily closed a stretch of sidewalk, a road lane and Comet Coffee.

The sidewalk and road lane is closed from the Maynard parking garage to the Nickels Arcade entrance.

An on-site worker said the pipe work is affecting the underground sewer system in Nickels Arcade. He said it should be repaired by the end of the day.

Jim Saborio, owner of Comet Coffee, said his coffee shop should reopen Friday morning.

“But we can be open today if someone wants to buy a bag of coffee,” Saborio said. “Just knock on our door.”

The other stores in Nickels Arcade are still open.

An environmental impact statement on this kind of project should be required, lest we further endanger the few surviving albino alligators in our sewers.
