UPS hiring more than 1,500 seasonal employees in Ann Arbor area

By Lizzy Alfs

To help deliver more than 120 million packages around the world this holiday season, UPS is hiring 55,000 seasonal employees nationwide.

That includes 2,115 seasonal workers in Michigan and 1,552 in the Ann Arbor area, said Donna Longino, UPS press relations manager, in an email.

The shipping company is hiring drivers, package sorters, loaders and unloaders.

The hiring this holiday season reflects a 10 percent increase over 2010, according to a news release.

UPS, which is expecting holiday package deliveries to increase this year from 113 million to 120 million, attributes the rise in deliveries to increased online shopping.

It is interesting that more packages are shipped by UPS because of online shopping during the Holiday season. What about the rest of the year? One would assume that shipping is up also. Then you have to ask yourself why isn't UPS hiring more FULL TIME people? Greedy Capitalist from Wall St? President Obama's economic policies? The Governor's policies?

Why are over 1/2 of the hires in Ann Arbor? Does Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Flint not have major UPS presences ?

This is also the time of year to start paying for that extra insurance on your package shipments.
