Zingerman's Roadhouse forced to close temporarily after water main break

By Nathan Bomey

Zingerman's Roadhouse, a restaurant on the west side of Ann Arbor, is currently closed due to a water main break after heavy rains pummeled the area overnight.

Zingerman's, a local conglomerate of food operations with more than 500 employees, announced the closure online.

"The Roadhouse is CLOSED due to a water main break, will keep you all posted with news!" the company posted in a tweet. "We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

UPDATE 1:38 p.m.: Zingerman's Roadhouse now says it expects to reopen at 4 p.m.

On its website, Zingerman's attributed the water main break to "all the rain that was dumped on Ann Arbor last night," which led to a flood warning today. Nearly 6 inches of rain fell in a 12-hour period, according to the National Weather Service.

"Crews from the city are here now, but we unfortunately have had to close while they repair it," the company said on its website.

Those of us who line up to eat at Zingerman's can obviously taste the difference. Zingerman's adds enormous value to Ann Arbor in many ways.

I think what people who proffer "well, if you think it's too expensive, just don't eat there" argument don't get is that the high ---often unreasonable --- prices Zingerman's charges have lead to across-the-board price inflation at many restaurants around town. Especially in Kerrytown, and in the downtown area, once Zingerman's enabled everyone by showing that yes, you could indeed find lots of people gullible enought spend $13 for a sandwich, everyone wanted in on the action, and prices continue to go up, with Zingerman's always the trendsetter. There's a reason that the cost of living is markedly higher in A2 than surrounding burgs, one of them being the cost of food, which in remarkably higher just locally in A2 than it is in just nearby communities like Ypsi, or Canton. One reason is Zingerman's. I don't patronize them, but the ripple effect of their inflated prices causes price inflaction all over town for lunches and dinners out at other restuarants and markets.

Do you really believe any of that? Wow.

I'm not a big fan of the Roadhouse (but I like the downtown Zingerman's). However, due to all of the bashing of the Roadhouse, I will now eat there much more often. Thanks!

I hope you do eat there and enjoy it—but after being served a bowl of $9 clam chowder, minus clams, and being told the invisible clams were there, even though they weren't, I will resist the urge to disturb the universe and eat at this magic place again.

I am happy that it has re-opened. I am happy that it exists. I am happy that the food is tasty and the people are friendly. I am happy that people who think it is overpriced don't go there. I am happy that I'm going there in a few hours to enjoy some bourbon and cheese!

Back Alley Gourmet has a reasonable priced good deli sandwich

I'm happy that people in this town can't get a good deli sandwich at a reasonable price because all of the out of touch rich people wont support any deli that's not zingermans.

This whole water main break is fabricated by Zingermans, with the sole purpose of raising the price of their fried chicken to $29.99.

I find it a bit laughable that someone who aspires to appear as the Noble Everyman with a moniker such as yours would so casually denigrate the efforts of so many by blithely flinging around terms like "greed" and "cronyism". Zingerman's employs quite a few folks; they work hard, do a damn fine job and most that I have met rather like working there. It's one of the few non-massive-corporate restaurant enterprises I know of that provides an extremely viable career tree for its employees and very livable wages. Maybe the pricing there has something to do with that? Or would you rather just have more McJobs?

Who said I'm unable to afford zingermans? I think the food is good, but over priced, and I choose not to eat there.

So Atticus, because you cannot afford to eat @ Zingerman's, then nobody else should either?

And, of course, you are the arbiter of what is and isn't a foolish waste of other people's money. While this must be thankless cross to bear, your service to the community has been duly noted by me.

You're certainly welcome to your oppinion... But if you're expecting me to give zingermans a medal of honor or a pat on the back for overcharging people, it's not gonna happen. I'm simply pointing out that alot of people are foolish by wasting their money there... I guess I should point out that there are others that are even more foolish that they are willing to go on a public forum, and defend the greed and cronyism that is zingermans.

You should come up with a list of restaurants you deem acceptable for the people of Ann Arbor to patronize. I'd hate to think that spending my own money where I want to is contributing to you not being able to buy things at the prices you demand.

Atticus F.

Thu, Jul 28, 2011 : 8:33 p.m.

No, but if less people were willing to throw away their money, zingermans would be forced to lower their prices so that others might afford to eat there.

The food is wonderful and Yes the prices is a little high but you know what the old saying is: You get what you pay for and the Food is good and YOU have to pay the price to get their wonderful food. It is also interesting to see the different types of workers, they are so casual and have such colorful body art on they, their is one lady that has many different kinds of birds and another lady that has forks, knife and a spoon on her arm that does take your order and when you talk to them about their body art, they do not mind to talk about it. Everyone there is so nice and friendly and it is a real experience to go their to eat. It is not main street but the food is much better.

NO other restaurant in that area have food as good as Zingermans, well one other on Zeeb Road called Metszers the German restaurant. Webers has alot of food that is frozen and they warm it up even during there Sunday Brunch and it is cold and some times frozen, NO other restaurant around Jackson and stadium is as good as Zingermans and their portions are so large and YOU will never get a bad meal.

The Quarter Bistro is right next door for those in distress. The food is fantastic and their prices are far better. Try the bourbon Street Muffaletta.

Goofus

Thu, Jul 28, 2011 : 5:14 p.m.

Never fear! Zingerman's will still figure out a way to pass this expense along to its loyal consumers with a smile and some fancy foodie language. Add a buck to the cost of heirloom tomatoes due to cracking from the water? Add some change to the costs of cheeses because of the increased cost of aging at improper temps?

Jimmy McNulty

Zingerman's business seems to be good without your individual contribution. If you don't like their product, don't patronize them.

If storm drains are overwhelmed, where do you think the water goes? It stays on the surface above the mains. Water mains do break if the soil they are set in is not designed for the amount of rain we had (same concept as a mudslide, but inside the ground). They break if there is a large "shear" -- or downward -- pressure difference between two sections (concrete distributes pressure differently than dirt). They break for a lot of reasons when pushed beyond their engineered capability. Before you start calling things fishy, wait for the report on what happened.

Water mains don't break from rain, storm drains do!
