By Nicola Rooney

Since childhood, in common with many others, Randy Wayne Wright always wanted to be a writer. The difference is that Randy has succeeded at realizing his dream. Before writing the Doc Ford novels Randy was a full-time fishing guide on Sanibel Island, Florida. He has done almost 3,000 charters and spent 300 days a year on the water. His dream started to develop when in 1978 he started to write for Outside Magazine. This started a steady career of magazine writing, but it wasn’t until the marina Randy worked for closed, he was forced to figure out what he should do with his life. As much as he loved the marina he has said that losing his job was the best thing that ever happened to him, “I had to make my living as a writer. I had two young sons and failure wasn’t an option.”

Seventeen books later the character of Doc Ford and his sailor buddy Tomlinson are still going strong. The new book in the series is “Deep Shadow.” Bill Cusumano, Nicola’s Books Buyer, thinks it is one of his best ever. Randy Wayne Wright will be at Nicola’s on Sunday, March 21st at 4 pm for a discussion and book signing.
