Concert series Music Under the Arch brings Michigan-based performers to downtown Saline

By Roger LeLievre

The mission of Music Under the Arch is simple, said Becky Pazkowski: “Bring top-notch music downtown to enhance the vibrancy of Saline.”

Pazkowski is talking about a relatively new concert series she helped found that unfolds every third Thursday through May at the 1890s-era Stone Arch Arts and Events building in Saline.

The series started last year with shows February-May. This year, the concerts started in January.

“The word we want to get out is we have great music coming to Saline,” Pazkowski said. “We really would like to see people come and enjoy the music and support the series—you can’t run a series if you don’t have an audience. We really would like the see people come, buy tickets, have dinner downtown … you’ll be home by 10 o’clock—it’s a great way to spend a Thursday evening.”

Looking ahead, harmonizing Ann Arborites the Chenille Sisters have been booked for the January 2013 show.

Michigan-made music is the series’ theme, Pazkowski added, with up-and-coming local bands taking the opening slots and made-in-Michigan acts for the headliners.

Established by Pazkowski, Nancy Byers, Jill Durnen and Karen Ragland, the vision of Music Under the Arch is to bring recognition to Saline as a destination for artists and fans to perform and experience music at its finest. Paul Pazkowski, former WEMU radio host of the Essential Troubadour Show, acts as MC. Music Under The Arch is a committee of the Saline Historic Downtown Alliance, a not-for-profit group.

In the spirit of partnership, Saline restaurants Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack, Mangiamo Italian Grill, Dan’s Downtown Tavern and the Brecon Grille are offering a special dinner discount and show package for ticket holders. Support has come from the Saline Downtown Merchants Association, as well as the Saline Area Players and the city of Saline itself, Pazkowski said. A series of art exhibits also run in conjunction with the Music Under The Arch concerts.
