Hot Tub Time Machine

One of the new movies opening this week is "Hot Tub Time Machine," a comedy starring John Cusack, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry. Yes, the premise sounds ridiculous, and I wouldn't ordinarily lead off "Daily Entertainment Links" with this. But Cusack — who's also one of the movie's producers — is my favorite modern-day actor, and the movie is set in 1986, which happens to be the year I graduated from college. So, here we go.

USAToday has a good feature story on the movie's cast. Gannett has a Q and A with Cusack in which he admits the title is stupid — on purpose. And EW.com has an item about the movie's wardrobe.

Meanwhile, in a new feature on AnnArbor.com, each week we'll be publishing brief summaries of the new movie openings, with a poll on which one you're most interested in. Exercise your right to vote.

Other entertainment items of note on the web today:

MORE MOVIES

• Here's a good read: Ann Arbor's favorite movie critic, homeboy Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly/EW.com, looks back 20 years on his most infamous review: giving a "D" to "Pretty Woman." The whole thing is worth reading, but he does now think he was largely wrong.

• The New York Times' ArtsBeat blog has an item on Roger Ebert reflecting on the end of "At the Movies," the long-running movie-review TV show.

• Reports say that Dennis Hopper is terminally ill.

• James Cameron is speaking out against the conversion of 2D movies to 3D. What's he afraid of, a 3D "Hurt Locker"?

MUSIC

• Adam Graham of The Detroit News takes a look at Taylor Swift's somewhat tarnished image in advance of her 2 sold-out concerts at the Palace this weekend. Meanwhile, here's a re-envisioning of Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” called the same-sex-crush version. As my colleague Jenn McKee notes, it probably wouldn't win over Kanye, but still worth watching:

• The Detroit Free Press has 5 questions with one-half of Tegan and Sara in advance of their sold-out show at the Royal Oak Music Theater.

• The new album by Marvin Sapp of Grand Rapids has hit No. 2 on the Billboard album chart, the highest placement ever for a gospel album, The Grand Rapids Press reports.

• According to MLive.com, Slash's upcoming solo album will feature guest spots from both Kid Rock and Iggy Pop.

• The Detroit News previews a 2-day event titled "Black Women Rock: Tribute to Betty Davis" at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit.

• For some local flavor today, Ypsilanti's October Babies has posted some video from a recent visit to University of MIchigan student radio station WCBN:

Robert Culp

• As has been widely reported, actor Robert Culp — of "I Spy," "Greatest American Hero" and "Everybody Loves Raymond," among others — has died. The Los Angeles Times' extensive obituary is here, and a related blog post notes that he never won an Emmy. The Washington Post's obit is here.

• "American Idol" went from 11 contestants to 10 last night, and MTV.com's 60-second recap covers the basics, and USAToday's Idol Chatter blog announces next week's theme.

• MLive.com reports that Michigan native Joel Manby will be featured on "Undercover Boss."

• Apparently Katherine Heigl really is leaving "Grey's Anatomy.
