The annual Manchester Chicken Broil is set for tonight (July 18) from 4 until 8 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Field in Manchester. More than 600 volunteers from the Manchester community organize this long-running event, which usually serves more than 12,000 hungry patrons in one evening.

Tickets are $9 at the gate, which will buy you a half-chicken, a roll with butter, radishes, coleslaw, chips and a beverage. There will be a vintage car show, live music, and a live broadcast from WLEN in Adrian.

Proceeds from the Manchester Chicken Broil benefit a variety of local Manchester causes, including schools, the library, Boy Scouts and area parks.

Parking is free, and there will be courtesy shuttle buses running from the parking lots to the Alumni Memorial Field entrance. For more information, see the event's website.

@Boris: Wouldn't it be nice if you had bothered to read the July 4 article on great upcoming events? This amazing event has been happening for 60 years. Mark your calendar. It'll likely be happening for another 60 years. It really is a marvel of volunteer and community spirit. http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/top-5-area-events-that-are-great-community-connections-spur-economy/

As always, thanks for the quality journalism, annarbor.com, letting us know about the chicken broil all of four hours ahead of time. Wouldn't it be nice if you had enough staff to get to writing up this event a day or two ahead of time?

1600 AM always advertises this event weeks in advance. WAAM broadcasts, "......and follow the signs. Better yet, follow the smoke," after giving some road directions.
