Tiesto appears at the EMU Convocation Center this weekend.

Tiesto, one of the biggest names on the global electronic-music scene, will bring his formidable trance-style turntable skills to Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center Friday night.

Organizers say a successful performance last October by Deadmau5, another electronica artist, paved the way for the Tiesto show. According to Adam Lynn, who produced that concert, close to 5,000 people attended.

“At the time that was (Deadmau5’s) biggest United States attendance for a single show—that caught some people’s attention,” he said. “Needless to say it’s been a little bit easier to contract some of these (other) artists now.”

Tiesto is the stage name for Tijs Michiel Verwest, who hails from the Netherlands, and who has been a DJ since he was a teen. Voted The Greatest DJ Of All Time by Mixmag and widely regarded as one of the world’s biggest DJ/producers, Tiesto has worked with superstars like Nelly Furtado, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sarah McLachlan and Goldfrapp. He performed live at the 2004 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, Greece, becoming the first DJ to play live on stage at the Olympics.

His recent Kaleidoscope World Tour spanned more than 175 dates across six continents in 15 months. Tiesto was nominated for two 2010 Billboard Touring Awards and listed in Billboard’s Top 25 biggest grossing global touring acts of 2010.

Tiesto recently launched “Tiesto In Concert” in Las Vegas, his monthly residency at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The tour that brings him to Ypsilanti is in support of his recent “Club Life - Volume One Las Vegas” mix album.

Although a promised interview fell through, he talked about “Club Life,” which features 15 of the new tracks and remixes all mixed seamlessly together, in comments posted on his website.

“I wanted a fresh new series to reflect my new style which has been evolving in the clubs for the past few years. It fees great to launch my own series on my new label,” Tiesto said.

Musically, he said he has been experimenting more than ever: “You would be surprised to hear what is on my personal playlist. I like all kinds of music and as I continue to develop as an artist I do not feel I should be confined to any one sound or expected genre.

“I draw influences from various sources, whether it be movies, the people I meet, and of course all the amazing places I have been lucky enough to visit. This is definitely one of the best things about being a DJ.”

Lynn, who began producing concerts under the name Social Studyz while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, is now the co-owner of the promotional company Prime Social Group, which is the entity bringing the Tiesto show to town.

Lynn said he expects similar success with Tiesto, who also employs eye-popping visuals in addition to the music.

“I saw him at the Electric Forest Festival and he was my favorite performer there. He doesn’t wear a hat like Deadmau5 does, and he doesn’t stand up on a Rubik’s Cube (shaped podium) like Deadmau5 does, but you can expect quite a show visually,” Lynn said.

Porter Robinson, an up-and-coming DJ in his own right, will open for Tiesto, as well as an as-yet unnamed local turntablist.

Robinson, 18, hit the scene after performing an opening slot on Tiesto’s recent Canadian tour. His first single, "Say My Name," has topped Beatport's Electro-House chart.

Blech! It's sorta shameful for EMU to be promoting these trance artists...esp. tripe like Tiesto... what with Detroit (and belleville!) being the birthplace of techno...

Say what you want about Tiesto's music, but that guy packs an energetic crowd. EMU is pulling some big names lately. Good for them.
