Michigan Theater offers summer filmmaking camps for young people
The Michigan Theater will offer three weeklong summer filmmaking camps for youth this coming July and August. Camps will run Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enrollment will be limited to 16 campers each week to maximize instructor-to-student interaction. All camps will take place at the historic Michigan Theater in downtown Ann Arbor.
Both levels will be led by award-winning Eastern Michigan University film studies professor Brooke Dagnan and Michigan Theater film camp manager Brian Hunter. Additional instructors will include experienced motion picture professionals, as well as film and video instructors from EMU. Camp details for this season are as follows:
INTRO TO FILMMAKING (suggested for 5th-8th grade) Two one-week stand-alone sessions are available: July 11-15 or July 25-29 9 a.m.-3 p.m. No experience required
For kids who dream of making movies, this is an opportunity to learn the basics of the filmmaking process by collaboratively writing, producing, directing and editing several short films. Instructors will provide digital camcorders and computers with professional editing software. Participants just need to bring creativity and a willingness to collaborate.
By the end of this introductory level workshop, participants will have filmed and edited at least three short films and had the opportunity to script and storyboard their own productions. All editing will be done on Mac computers using Final Cut editing software.
INTERMEDIATE FILMMAKING (suggested for 9th-12th grade) August 1-5 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Prerequisite: Prior attendance at primary camp level or some basic filmmaking experience required
This one-week film camp moves beyond the basics, allowing campers to learn the three necessary components of creating a film. Campers will learn the importance of working together to produce a polished and complete film. They will go through the steps of preproduction, shooting, and finally editing the film into a completed piece. Scripts will be supplied for these productions; however, interested campers can submit a simple 3-10 page script for consideration to be used during camp.
As a finale to this educational experience for campers at the Michigan, the public is invited, along with all camp participants, to attend the final project screening at the Michigan Theater on Saturday, August 20 at 1 p.m. Participants' films will be shown at a special free film camp matinee that's open to the public. This is what every filmmaker dreams of - showing their work on the big screen!
Students will also be given a DVD of all their projects to take home. CAMP FEES: All camps are offered at the same price. Prices are per student, per week.
