Michigan Theater to screen "The Godfather"

By Bob Needham

Well, they don't get much more "classic" than this.

The Michigan Theater's Summer Classic Film Series next week offers up one of the very best movies to come out of Hollywood: 1972's "The Godfather."

Francis Ford Coppola's movie looks at a Mafia family in the 1940s and 1950s. Marlon Brando is the patriarch and Al Pacino one of his sons. The movie won Oscars for best picture, best actor (Brando) and best screenplay, but that only hints at its influence and popularity. It's just great commercial filmmaking, and it holds up terrifically.

It's almost a shame that this has come to be known as "Part I" of the Godfather trilogy. I mean, of course that's what it is, but this movie stands on its own. If by some chance you've never gotten around to seeing it, this is the way to do it.

Check out the links below under "More Info" for some of the rapturous praise that's been heaped on this movie over the years.

"The Godfather" screens at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Michigan, 603 E. Liberty St. Advance tickets are available at ticketweb.com.

Here's something to whet your appetite:

They have been screening some excellent movies (i.e The Searchers). Nice to be able to see these classics on the "Big Screen." Maybe I'm just getting old, but the movies today are rarely worth the price of admission....

Yes, definitely, movie tickets are always available at the box office a half-hour before show times. Regular Michigan Theater prices apply: $9 regular; $7 for students, seniors and children under 12; or $6.50 for Michigan Theater members.
