Students get schooled in Jedi ways at summer camp
Summer campers at Honey Creek Community School on Wednesday got a taste of battle, Jedi-style.
Members of local theater troupe The Ring of Steel visited the school dressed in Star Wars costume and led the 45 campers through a series of battle moves, complete with lightsabers — much to the campers' delight.
"It was fun because we got to fight Jedi masters," said Julian Ascani, 5, who has been attending Honey Creek camps all summer. "We won because we made him fall down, and he dropped his lightsaber and it turned off."
Honey Creek school runs 11 weeks of summer camp, and each week has a different theme.
This week's theme is Galactic Adventures, with activities relating to space and the solar system, and playing off popular space-themed movies such as Star Trek and Star Wars.
Campers have already built an "Ewok Village," made model planets and visited "Darth Vader's Beauty Academy," where they painted each other's faces and gave each other crazy hairdos, said Sue Hofbauer, school-age program supervisor at Honey Creek.
Wednesday's mock battle was one of the highlights of the week, and using a lightsaber was the highlight of the day for camper Katherine Andrews, 6, who has never seen Star Wars.
"I liked the sword fighting because I got to use my sword, and the strangest thing is that it turned colors — yellow and green," she said. "My sister wonders if there's, like, a purple Star Wars sword or a green one. Or maybe pink."

We want to again thank Ring of Steel for their wonderful work at our camp and also express our sincere thanks to Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers of the Great Lakes Garrison, which is the Michigan Chapter of the 501st Legion, and Qui-Gon Jinn of the Rebel Legion, for helping make an already fun event an absolute blast for the Honey Creek campers, the High Point students, and the children at Gretchen's House. THANK YOU!

This is too cool. What are some of Honey Creek Community School's other camping themes? High marks for originality!

This is such a great idea! There was nothing this cool at my summer camp; I'm calling ROS for a do-over.
