The University Musical Society announced today that its planned January 8 concert at the Michigan Theater by Algerian singer-songwriter Souad Massi has been canceled.

According to UMS, Massi canceled all her planned U.S. appearances.

From the announcement:

"Massi’s concert was to have been the first event in UMS’s four-event Africa series highlighting the rich musical traditions of the continent. The series will now open with South African vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo in their UMS debut (Sunday, January 31), continue with Béla Fleck: The Africa Project (Wednesday, February 17), and conclude with an explosive concert by Senegalese Afro-Pop superstar Baaba Maal (Saturday, April 10).

"UMS has notified ticketholders of the event cancellation.  Ticketholders may return their tickets to UMS for a full refund, or donate their tickets back to UMS for a tax-deductible contribution...
