UMS elects new board members

The University Musical Society, Ann Arbor's longtime fine-arts presenting organization, has announced the election of new board members.

Joining the board are Janet Callaway, Stephen R. Forrest, Shelia M. Harden, Donald Morelock and David N. Parsigian. James Stanley was re-elected to a one-year term as board chair.

The full text of the announcement from UMS:

ANN ARBOR, MI (July 12, 2010) — New Board members and officers for the University Musical Society were elected at the annual meeting of the UMS Board of Directors on June 22. The new members and officers began their appointments on July 1, 2010.

James Stanley, who has served on the UMS Board since January 2003, was re-elected for a second one-year term as UMS Board Chair. Dr. Stanley has also served on the Finance, Governance, and Marketing Committees. He chaired the Development Committee from 2007 to 2009, and in 09/10 chaired UMS’s Strategic Planning Committee, which recently unveiled UMS’s five-year strategic plan. Dr. Stanley was Head of the Vascular Surgery Service at the University of Michigan until 2004, and currently is the Marion and David Handleman Research Professor of Vascular Surgery in the U-M Medical School.

Other officers who were re-elected for one-year terms include David Herzig (Vice Chair), Martha Darling (Secretary), and Robert C. Macek (Treasurer).

Five new Board members were elected to three-year terms. The new Board members are Janet Callaway, a semi-retired former administrator in the Ann Arbor School District and management consultant; Stephen R. Forrest, University of Michigan Vice President for Research, and the William Gould Dow Collegiate Professor in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics; Shelia M. Harden, President and CEO of GS Harden & Associates, LLC, an independent management consulting firm; Donald Morelock, professor of piano at Schoolcraft College and an alumnus of the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance; and David N. Parsigian, a Managing Partner of the Ann Arbor office of the law firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP where he specializes in venture capital finance and representation of technology-based companies. DJ Boehm, Anne Glendon, David Herzig, and Melvin Lester were re-elected to a second three-year term. Biographies of all new Board members are listed at the end of this release.

In addition, the Board recognized five members who are stepping down after the completion of their terms: Kathleen Benton, Charles Borgsdorf, Maxine Frankel, Patricia Garcia, and John J.H. Schwarz. UMS Board members are subject to term limits and may serve two complete terms plus optional one-year extensions as executive officers before stepping down and joining the UMS Senate, a group of former UMS Board members who continue to assist in promoting UMS’s mission.

Detailed biographies of the new UMS Board Members follow:

Janet Callaway is currently semi-retired and her work life has had three distinct areas of focus. First, following college she was a professional cellist for ten years. Second, she spent twenty years in public education in Ann Arbor, initially as an elementary teacher, then as a language arts consultant, and finally in administrative roles including serving as principal at King Elementary, assistant at Pioneer High School, and then head principal at Tappan Middle School. Third, beginning in 1990, she began work as an external consultant, facilitator, and trainer, engaging a variety of public, private, and non-profit organizations as clients. In addition, she spent three years as Director of Religious Education at the First United Unitarian Church and has been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. She holds a Bachelors degree in Music and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan, and a Masters degree in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University. Janet has always valued her involvement in the community, having served on several non-profit Boards as well as offering her skills in organizational development, pro bono, to various non-profit entities. She relishes the opportunities that retirement affords her to increase these activities. She is married to Louis Callaway, Jr., and has three adult children, an adult step-son, and four grandchildren.

Stephen R. Forrest received a B.A. in Physics from the University of California, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Michigan. In 2006, he rejoined the University of Michigan as Vice President for Research, and as the William Gould Dow Collegiate Professor in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics. In 1985, Prof. Forrest joined the Electrical Engineering and Materials Science Departments at USC where he worked on optoelectronic integrated circuits, and organic semiconductors. In 1992, he became the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University. He served as director of the National Center for Integrated Photonic Technology, and as Director of Princeton's Center for Photonics and Optoelectronic Materials (POEM). From 1997-2001, he served as the Chair of Princeton’s Electrical Engineering Department. He is co-founder or founding participant in several companies, including Sensors Unlimited, Epitaxx, Inc., Global Photonic Energy Corp., Universal Display Corp. (NASDAQ: PANL) and ASIP, Inc., and is on the Board of Directors of Applied Materials and PD-LD, Inc. Prof. Forrest chairs the Board of Ann Arbor SPARK and his wife Rosamund is a member of the UMS Advisory Committee.

Shelia M. Harden is the President/CEO of GS Harden & Associates, LLC, an independent management consulting firm focused on helping companies Go Lean. The hallmark of the firm’s work focuses on understanding the voices of the customers to develop lean solutions that improve safety, quality, service, and cost. Since 1982, Ms. Harden worked in the automotive community deploying lean, Six Sigma principles and training within many companies including Alcoa, Ford Motor Co, General Motors, Tenneco Automotive, and various other automotive suppliers, yielding an average $2.1 million savings per company and earning her a global reputation for applying Lean Solutions to eliminate waste and improve quality. In 2008, Ms. Harden turned her attention to America’s healthcare industry where she developed a “Patient-Centered” business model to improve safety, quality, delivery time, and cost performance. Collaborating with partners and investors, Ms. Harden has designed a new software solution to support U.S. healthcare in its lean transformation. She is a certified ISO 9000 Lead Assessor, and lean, Six Sigma Black Belt and Customer-Focus Six Sigma Green Belt trainer. She holds an MBA from Marion College (Indiana) and a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University at Indianapolis. She resides in Ann Arbor with her husband Greg and daughter Olivia.

Donald Morelock is a professor of piano at Schoolcraft College (Livonia) whose students have gone on to win international competitions, enroll in leading music schools, and enjoy rich careers as musicians and conductors. A frequent performer and speaker at national conferences, he has received five national awards for excellence in piano teaching. Morelock graduated from the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance and has attended UMS concerts on a regular basis since student days. He has also been a sponsor of many UMS piano recitals. Prof. Morelock is co-director of the American-Russian Piano Institute and has sponsored ten summer programs at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, the Gnessin Institute, and the Moscow Conservatory. His students have successfully competed in major international competitions including the Tchaikovsky and Van Cliburn, have graduated with honors from the Paris Conservatoire, Moscow and St. Petersburg Conservatories, and have performed with the Paris Symphony Orchestra. Prof. Morelock has developed large outreach programs for piano students and teachers throughout Southeast Michigan, including the Ann Arbor Bach Festival. He is artistic director for music recitals and workshops at Schoolcraft College which annually draw over 10,000 students, teachers, and community members from throughout the region.

David N. Parsigian is the Managing Partner of the Ann Arbor office of the law firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP where he specializes in venture capital finance and representation of technology-based companies. He has extensive experience in advising technology businesses with respect to locating sources of capital and structuring financings ranging from seed capital to initial public offerings. His legal expertise includes corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, and technology licensing. Mr. Parsigian is a lecturer on matters relating to private equity finance and venture capital at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and Walsh College. He has also been a frequent presenter at meetings of the Association of University Technology Managers. Mr. Parsigian currently serves as the Board Secretary and member of the Executive Committee of Ann Arbor SPARK, the economic development organization for Washtenaw County, as well as a member of the national advisory board of the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). He previously served as the board chair of both the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce and the Washtenaw Community College Foundation, and as a member of the Board of Non-Profit Enterprise at Work. Mr. Parsigian received his law degree, with honors, from the University of Texas, and a B.S.M.E (mechanical engineering), magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan. He is a long-time resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a graduate of Huron High School.
