Voodoo Lighthouse brings the rock on 'Fight Forever'

With all the different genres and sub-genres and alt-sub-genres of pop music these days, it’s almost surprising — and somewhat refreshing — to come across a flat-out, no-apologies rock band.

Ann Arbor’s Voodoo Lighthouse is such a band. And even though their new album, “Fight Forever,” wouldn’t have sounded much out of place on WRIF in the mid-1980s, it manages to breathe some life into a style many have given up for dead.

The band has been around since 1999, but this is only its second album (and, at six songs, it’s actually more of an EP). In recent years, Voodoo Lighthouse has shifted its direction a bit, adding a second guitarist and, according to the band’s bio, adopting a less heavy sound than in the past.

I wasn’t familiar with the “old” Voodoo Lighthouse, but the new version just plain sounds good. The new album is accomplished rock music that once would have been called mainstream, featuring accomplished guitar hooks, tight drumming and muscular vocals.

The leadoff track, “So Predictable,” is probably my favorite, but the band maintains a consistent quality and and energy level throughout the record. Band members are Luke Swanson, vocals; Chris Cote, guitar; Jordan Jones, drums; Rob Hartwell, bass; and Brian Wakeman, guitar.

If a little new-fashioned album rock sounds good, you could do a lot worse than Voodoo Lighthouse’s “Fight Forever.” It’s available for download at Amazon.com and on iTunes, and the band plays local dates pretty regularly.
