Nov. 5 marks the beginning of the beautiful five day Festival of Lights, when the religious traditions of India (Hindus, Jains and Sikhs) celebrate the simplicity of light with Diwali.

During the festivities, celebrants light small clay lamps, candles, or even fireworks to symbolize the triumph of good over evil, according to Read the Spirit. Friends and family share foods and exchange gifts in a joyful spirit that Hindu follower Julia Roberts compared to Christmas in the United States in a recent Elle magazine interview.

Are you or someone you know celebrating Diwali this year? What is your tradition?
