Transforming a room using reused furniture

Family room with new furniture arrangement.

The first step is admitting you have a problem right? Last week I did just that. I admitted to all of my readers that our house is seriously lacking in furniture, the walls are all white, and I can't decorate to save my life (for the full post, including "before" pictures, click here.) But I want to live in a gorgeous home that exudes warmth and hospitality the moment you step in the door. Talk about a problem. Lucky for me my good friend Liz, over at Designing Domesticity, offered to help.

I sent her a few pictures of our current layout and what we wanted to use the space for.  She sent back a great layout proposal; click here to check it out.

After getting her proposal, I furiously ran around rearranging furniture and stopped by my favorite antique store in Ann Arbor, The Treasure Mart. I lucked out and found a gorgeous table to fit the space. It is sturdy, reused, was a great price, and is just the perfect piece for us. So without further ado here is what the room looks like today.

I'm still on the look out for chairs and an ottoman to put by the fireplace. The sofa and television will be moving into the other room on Wednesday. But just this change has made an enormous difference in how we live. I finally feel like we are making this our home.  Stay tuned -- there is more to come!

Jim, I do have a brother Dave but not the III'd. So glad you liked it, I would love to know where your favorite places are?! I'm sure you know all the great ones, please share:)

Sarah, how nice to see your posting! Quick question- related to Dave (the III'd) by any chance? He was a temporary house mate recently, and in order to do up the guest room properly I had to make visits to my favorite places, the Treasure Mart being tops on the list! As an interior designer, I prefer and love to utilize previously loved and cared for items when appropriate. I firmly believe that inanimate things do in fact come along with good Karma in most cases. It is wonderful to place an item into a new setting or home to continue it's useful life in service to a new owner or family.

I know I totally lucked out with this table! It is a Kindel!! Usually I go on the hunt for something wonderful and come home empty handed, but not last week:)

It can be so refreshing to redecorate. And it can be pretty cheap when you use antique stores, craigslist finds, or etsy. Enjoy the new look!
