Ann Arbor’s sole boxing gym, the A2 Fight Club, is hosting its third annual James “Lights Out” Toney Invitational this weekend.
James “Lights Out” Toney, a Huron High School graduate, is a professional boxer and aspiring mixed martial artist who was twice named Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year. The three-day event billed in his name runs this weekend, Friday-Sunday, at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Ann Arbor.
The event will consist of registered boxers from all over the Midwest -- male and female, in all weight classes and ages; 8 years old being the youngest -- competing in Olympic-style matches.
“It’s basically a national invitational tournament,” said Eric McGuire, a former boxer who started the A2 Fight Club in 2006. “It’s a very competitive tournament. We have a lot of top fighters and national champions who compete.”
The A2 Fight Club, which has youth and adult programs, competes in tournaments across the country. This weekend, they get to stay planted in Ann Arbor.
And according to McGuire, the James “Lights Out” Toney Invitational is the only boxing tournament of its kind in Michigan.
“You have kids here from Michigan that don’t get out to those national tournaments because they’re too far away,” said McGuire, 39, who won a national tournament in Ohio when he was 11. “I wanted to create something here that would be at that level. So they can experience it and keep them interested in boxing.”
McGuire estimated there being roughly 100-150 participants at this weekend’s tournament.
The James “Lights Out” Toney Invitational is open to the public with a fee of $15 a person.
Friday’s competition runs from 6-10 p.m., followed by Saturday and Sunday competition held from 1-4 p.m.
The invite’s venue, the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, is located at 2900 Jackson Avenue in Ann Arbor.
