Backyard lovebird in Burns Park spotted at feeder; it's not from around here

By Edward Vielmetti

A parrot has been spotted at backyard bird feeders in the vicinity of Stadium and Packard in the Burns Park neighborhood. Sara Forstner sent in this photo, identified as a peach faced lovebird (or perhaps a Lilian's lovebird), and noted that the bird appeared on July 29 and again August 12.

Lilian's lovebirds are considered threatened and are rare in captivity; the peach faced lovebird is easier to breed and is more likely to live in the wild. An article in The Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, "Feral Parrots in the Continental United States and United Kingdom: Past, Present, and Future" (doi: 10.1647/183) by Dr. Christopher J. Butler at the University of Central Oklahoma details the spread of parrots out of captivity and notes that a breeding colony of these birds was well established in the wild in the Phoenix, Arizona area. The range of introduced parrot species is limited in part by cold weather causing frostbite in the birds.

We had a BRIGHT yellow parakeet flocking with the sparrows at our feeder for a few weeks last winter. I hope it survived--it was amazing to see, with everything else white or brown.
