Downtown Ann Arbor rated best downtown in America

By Maura K. Thomson

Headlines are important. With all this search engine optimization stuff I have been told the headline makes a difference. So I thought this was a good headline. It's also true. I have rated downtown Ann Arbor the best downtown in America and I know many of you out there would agree with me. Who makes a rating "official" anyway? Are you thinking "they" do?? Now that we have established how I feel about downtown Ann Arbor I'd like to introduce myself.

My name is Maura Thomson and I am the Executive Director of the Main Street Area Association, a nonprofit, merchant based organization in the Main Street area. I have worked for the Association since 2005, taking over the role of director from my good friend Ellie Serras in October of 2008. I have lived in Ann Arbor for 10 years arriving here by way of Atlanta, Fairfield County, CT, and originally Everett, a city just outside of Boston.

I love our community and our downtown. Check out this blog for an update on downtown events, sales, happenings, anecdotes, construction, openings, closings, etc.... By nature I am not confrontational nor politically savvy, if you are looking for controversial topics and political nuggets I recommend City Council minutes.

So the head of the downtown merchants group "rated" downtown Ann Arbor as the "best downtown in America." And she's going to tell us all about it I'm sure in the coming weeks. Are you kidding? Is this the type of propaganda that's going to be posted on annarbor.com? Give me a break! By the way, I've just "rated" your Website as second rate.

Well, they usually are peers and I would hope such a headline would be supported by peer review. While I am not disagreeing with you, I hope you find the peer reviews needed to make this headline stick!
