Millers Creek Film Festival accepting entries on local watershed preservation

A look at a previous entry to the Huron River Watershed Council's film festival posted on YouTube.com.
The Huron River Watershed Council is accepting entries for its fifth annual Millers Creek Film Festival through Feb. 2.
The film festival is looking to feature short videos and public service announcements about protecting the Huron River watershed or to find a way to connect residents with the river.
There are three categories for entries: films under 5 minutes from adult filmmakers, films under 5 minutes from school-age filmmakers and 30-second public service announcements. Winners will receive $500 and will have their work shown at a public screening at the Michigan Theater, 603 East Liberty Street, on March 19. The films will also be used for the watershed council's public outreach.
The watershed council posted previous entries on YouTube. For more information, visit the Web site www.hrwc.org/events/millers-creek-film-festival or contact Pam Labadie at plabadie@hrwc.org or 734-769-5123, ext. 17.

Stonefly hunt scheduled for late January
The watershed council is looking for volunteers to head out in teams to search out winter stoneflies on Jan. 30 as part of a long-term study of the local environment.
Volunteers will be teamed up with trained searchers to look for the stone flies only found during the winter months when many fish are too sluggish to eat them. The searches will be conducted between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. or between noon at 4:30 p.m. at sites along the Huron River in Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland, and Wayne Counties.
For more information, visit www.hrwc.org/volunteer/stonefly/, e-mail jmartin@hrwc.org or call 734-769-5123, ext.11.
