Community High School Top Scholars
Community High School held its 2011 graduation ceremonies Tuesday, May 31 at University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium. The class included 110 graduates.
Chelsea Cendrowski
Parents: Victoria and Dwight Cendrowski
Activities and Awards: Chelsea is a recipient of the CHS Bea of Light Awards and a member of the National Honor Society. She is the founder and teacher of karma Yoga and is a volunteer at Mott Children’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and Food gatherers. She is a dancer and choreographer in the CHS Dance Body.
Plans after graduation: Chelsea plans to study nursing at the University of Michigan.
Katherine (Annie) Flynn
Parents: Kit and Mike Flynn
Activities and Awards: Annie was awarded the Silver Medal in the national Spanish Examination. She dances with the CHS Dance Body, is a member of the national Honor Society and is a volunteer at the St. Andrews Breakfast Program and Alpha House. Annie is also a Sunday School teacher at St. Clare's and dances at Swing City Dance Studio.
Plans after graduation: Annie plans to study art education at Carleton College
Michelle Grifka
Parents: Michael and Deborah Grifka
Activities and Awards: Michelle is a member of Mock Trial Team A, the current Michigan state champion and co-editor of Free Verse. She is also a member of Queer Straight Alliance, National Honor Society and Community Ensemble Theater and is a peer educator for the Depression Awareness Group. Michelle was awarded the CATCH/Detroit News Outstanding Senior Award in Language Arts and was the winner of National Spanish Exam Junior Travel Award.
Plans after graduation: Michelle plans to study English and psychology at the University of Michigan.
Mary Katharine O'Brien
Parents: Mary Jane and Michael O'Brien
Activities and Awards: Katie is a Detroit News/CATCH Outstanding Graduate of 2011, co-editor in chief of the Communicator, the nation's leading school newspaper for two consecutive years. Her column, Eco-Echoes, was awarded Honorable Mention in the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association. She is a member of Neutral Zone's Green Group and the CHS National Honor Society, and she participated in Powershift in Washington, D.C.
Plans after graduation: Katie plans to study human ecology at the College of the Atlantic.
Elizabeth Rolston
Parents: Kathryn Rinehart and David Rolston
Activities and Awards: Elizabeth has been a four-year member of the CHS Dance Body, choreographer and teacher. She attended the University of Michigan’s MPulse summer Dance Institute, was a student at Broadway Dance Center in New York and has excelled in AP classes at Pioneer High School.
Plans after graduation: Elizabeth plans to study movement science at the University of Michigan.
Elise Wander
Parents: Toni and Joseph Wander
Activities and Awards: Elise has been a member the two-time state Mock Trial Championship Team, a National Merit Finalist and the publisher/editor of the CHS literary magazine Free Verse. As an artist, her work has been featured at WSG Gallery. She has also been involved in the Community Ensemble Theater, the Queer Straight Alliance and is a depression awareness peer mentor.
Plans after graduation: Elise plans to study English and psychology at the University of Chicago.
