Authorities: Former U-M student found dead on California mountain

From the Google + page of Boris Avdeev
Authorities are confirming the death of Boris Avdeev, 31, the U-M doctoral graduate who went missing during a backcountry ski trip in California.
On Thursday at about 3:30 p.m., Avdeev was found by search and rescue teams in Cocaine Chute, a popular backcountry skiing location, according to the Mono County Sheriff’s Department.
He had been missing since April 19.
As of Friday afternoon, search and rescue teams, aided by a helicopter, are continuing to try to recover Avdeev’s body from the chute.
On May 1, police found a note left under the windshield wiper of Avdeev’s Honda Civic stating he was heading up Mount Dana Couloir for the day to ski down Cocaine Chute.
Search and rescue teams from surrounding counties scoured the mountains for days before locating him.
Avdeev was a doctoral candidate in the Earth and Environmental Sciences department at U-M from 2006 to 2011, when he graduated with a specialty in tectonics. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Avdeev was also a specialist in the geology of the Greater Caucus Mountains.
According to U-M assistant professor Nathan Niemi, his former student was working for him part-time while living out West. Niemi said Avdeev was scheduled to start a post-doctorate fellowship at the University of California - Berkeley in the fall.
Avdeev was an experienced backcountry skier and had spent a lot of time in the outdoors, according to Niemi.
“He was a very friendly and outgoing guy,” Neimi said. “People liked Boris.”

Very sad article. Very good example of community copy editing of reporter. Does anyone who knows Boris, think that as a Russian, and Russians culturally being known for gallows humor, think that Boris would find amusing the comments chastising the spelling, syntax and related content?

Sloppy journalism. The "message" is correct but the spelling errors are just well....lazy, sloppy errors....A big part of my job is PROOFREADING....and let me tell you....you get reminded too many times...you won't be reminded much longer.

If he graduated from U-M, was he not an alumnus as opposed to an ex-student?

I think so. I think "alumnus," or "UM graduate," or" recent UM PhD" all would have been better choices than "Ex-student"

I was praying for a different outcome. Very sad. Not to be disrespectful, but you do have his last name spelled two different ways in the article.
