Benefit concert scheduled to help pay for funeral of Canton Township woman killed by drunken driver

By Lee Higgins

A classical pianist is holding a benefit concert Saturday to help pay for the funeral of a Canton Township woman who was killed by a driver police say was drunk when he caused a five-car crash in Ypsilanti Township last month.

Elizabeth Lesesne-Dixon will hold the event to help the family of Stephanie Stone in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity at Concordia University Ann Arbor, a university news release said. It starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Stone's funeral was Saturday, but the family needs help paying for it.

"When a tragedy like this occurs, the community needs to pull together and help those affected," Lesesne-Dixon said in a statement. "Not knowing the family personally, this is the best way to give of myself."

Stone, who worked at a Dairy Queen in Canton, was killed Oct. 26 when deputies say a drunken driver ran a red light, and his vehicle slammed into her car. Stone's 13-year-old son was seriously injured.

Bradley Wayne Howard, 34, of Ypsilanti Township faces numerous charges in the case, including second-degree murder and operating while intoxicated causing death.

Tickets will be available at the door, the release said. Donations can be mailed to Stark Funeral Service, 202 S. Washington St., Ypsilanti, MI 48197. Checks should be made out to "Stark Funeral Service" in care of Stephanie Stone.

According to the release, Stone was the niece of Char Grant, the university's director of housekeeping.

Or in worst case scenario, can't the funeral cost be recovered from one's own insurance?

Why can't the funeral cost be recovered from the killer driver or the insurance company of the killer driver?
