The funeral for the 24-year-old Lima Township man killed this week in a Dexter Township crash is set for Wednesday, Aug. 15.
Christopher James "C.J." Boyer was killed Wednesday night when the car he was riding in, driven by David William Fishburn, crashed while heading south on Lima Center Road south of Island Lake Road.
Winston Boyer, C.J.'s grandfather, of Chelsea, said his grandson was a good person and a hard worker. C.J. played football and basketball in school and he had lots of friends, Boyer said.
C.J. lived in the area his entire life and was a 2006 graduate of Chelsea High School, according to his obituary. He received a football scholarship to attend Saginaw Valley State University and then played at Grand Rapids Community College.
"His hobbies included hunting, riding four wheelers, and snowmobiling, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family," the obituary said. He also worked for Midwest Door and Window for several years.
Deputies previously said Fishburn, 25, of the Chelsea area, lost control of the car and that speed, alcohol and road conditions appeared to be factors in the crash. Police were not able to provide additional details on the crash.
Fishburn suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
C.J. is the son of James E. Boyer and the late Mary Beth (Aspiranti) Boyer.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. Burial will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the C.J. Boyer Memorial Football Scholarship in care of Chelsea High School.
