Attack leaves victim bleeding on ground outside Ann Arbor bar

By Cindy Heflin

A group of men beat and punched a Milan man, leaving him bleeding on the ground in front of an Ann Arbor bar early Sunday morning, police said.

Ann Arbor officers called to 1220 S. University Ave. at 1:50 a.m. Sunday found the 21-year-old man lying on the ground bleeding and suffering from multiple head injuries, Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush.

Witnesses told police the man and a friend, a 22-year-old from Ypsilanti, were walking along South University Avenue when a group of four men approached them and started yelling at them. As the two men continued walking, the group of four men followed and got closer to them.

One of the men then punched the Ypsilanti man, and the other three men jumped him outside the Blue Leprechaun, Bush said. The Ypsilanti man’s friend then joined the fight, she said.

As the fight continued, the men stomped on the victim and kicked him, Bush said.

A bouncer at the Blue Leprechaun broke up the fight, she said.

The victim was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital bleeding from the nose and mouth, Bush said.

Police are investigating the attack.

I was just alerted to this by a friend. One of these men is a friend of mine. Really shocked. What is wrong with this world? I want these (inset expletive here) caught. But I know that it probably won't happen. This is so messed up.

I don't see how or why this is tied to the Blue Lep bar, the victim was walking down the street and happened to be assaulted in front of the bar. If he were assaulted in front of Insomniac Cookies would that have been mentioned???

the UofM sports types typically hang out at this place. They have aggression problems. One of these days some of these idiots are going to get shot & killed doing stuff like this. Nice to feel invincible and superior to everyone else to the point where you start picking fights and ganging up on people.

four against one....disgusting but typical. sure takes a REAL MAN(sarcasm) to join an gang of equally tough "men" and pick a fight with someone......

Sadly, the COWARDS who did this will probably not be caught. I'd love to be wrong about this, but how much time will be spent investigating this, with the police stretched as thin as it currently is?

This is one reason we do need cops on the streets of downtown Ann Arbor.

and that isn't 'downtown', so it wouldn't do much good to have cops downtown. That is more uptown area where central campus is.

This area seems to fall under UofM police dept.

We do have police, but not on the street at this time. Go figure! They would rather man a radar trap. Much easier targets and duty. Go figure!

Beat cops might carry cameras to photograph late-night groups outside bars, etc. Digital photos on SD cards are almost free and take less time than a request to move on. Anyone can legally take such photographs, but I wouldn't without a uniform.

Even back when this place was TouchDown Cafe there was still always a certain "element" that hung out in front of it seemingly looking for trouble. I used to purposely cross the street if I had to walk across it after dark.
