9 SUVs vandalized at Ann Arbor auto dealer

By Cindy Heflin

A thief or thieves broke windows and stole GPS units from nine sport utility vehicles at an auto dealership in Scio Township early Thursday morning.

Suburban Chevrolet general manager Mike Mosser said the thieves broke the rear passenger windows of seven Cadillac Escalades and two Chevrolet Suburbans and tore apart the dashboards to get at the units.

The damage amounted to $97,000, he said.

Mosser said breaking the back windows did not trigger the alarms on the cars. The dealership, located at 3515 Jackson Road, will be installing new alarms that will be activated by any glass breakage or lifting of the vehicle, he said.

Mosser said vehicle access to the lots is blocked off, so those responsible are believed to have entered on foot. The thefts occurred between midnight and 3 a.m. Thursday, he said.

Surveillance video has been turned over to the Washtenaw County sheriff’s department, he said.

Good news is no one was physically assaulted or hurt during the commission of this burglary. Insurance will take care of the losses. Shame that so much damage was done for semi worthless items like GPS.

Gives a different perspective on Suburban's billboard on southbound US23, which says something like "Come take a stroll around our lot." Seriously.

Hopefully if they get caught they get more than a slap on the wrist and probation.

You mean despite all of the loud "look at me!!" horn honking as the owners of these vehicles arm their alarms, the alarms don't even alert if the back window is smashed out? THAT is the alarm technology GM is providing customers in 2011? No wonder so many vehicles still get stolen and burgled. Those thieves aren't dumb - they know simple info like that.

Too bad this happened to a domestic car dealership.

What percentage of an Escalade/Suburban is domestic? Honda Civic and Accord are up 90 percentile.

This is a damn shame, $97,000 is a lot of damage. I hope these thugs are caught soon.

Amazing they weren't caught., as I thought all of those dealerships had night security on patrol. Aren't these Escalades parked under bright lights and face Wagner Road?
