Homeowner scares off intruder who smashed front door glass

A Pittsfield Township resident scared off an intruder Thursday night after the man broke the glass in his front door.
The resident heard the sound of glass breaking in his front door about 9 p.m. at his home in the 4200 Block of Washtenaw Avenue and discovered the man inside, Pittsfield Township police said in a news release. He fled when the homeowner confronted him.
Police searched the area but could not find him. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
The suspect is a man about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium to heavy build, police said. He was wearing a black winter jacket with a hood.

What happened to the comment with 13 replies which included a reply with links for alarm systems you can buy for your home (not ADT)? I have had undercover police on my street because of break-ins in the area, and want to get one of these systems, came back looking for the links but it is now missing?? Help!

In most home invasions situations, experts advise never to "confront" the intruder. Retreat to your (hopefully preplanned) safe location, with gun & flashlight AND cell phone - call 911 for help. You MUST make the intruder come to you - going after them is too dangerous for a number of reasons.

Several local gun clubs, such as Tri-County Sportsman's League in Saline, Washtenaw Sportsman's Club in Ypsilanti, and Western Wayne Conservation Club in Plymouth, teach Personal Protection in the Home. It's a very good course. I personally have seen how Tri-County teaches it; they do a good job.

Praise the Lord! Gun ownership and carrying is not as scary or dangerous as a lot of people believe. With proper accreditted traing and a good dose of confidence it is like driving a car. Just be responsible, respectful, and aware and it will save your life.

"[The intruder] fled when the homeowner confronted him." I hope the homeowner was armed when he confronted the intruder, or we could've been reading a different story this morning. Nothing says "get out" like S&W, Sig Sauer or Glock.

The rack of a shotgun is also very effective. You don't even need to show it - the sound is enough.

yes grimmk there was and I was wondering if it wasn't include b/c of that hubbub, now if they did have race along with the clothing and height discriptions it might trigger a memory of someone who was in the area. Otherwise all we know it was a man (ish) looking person.

I know right? There are probably 100,000 men in this area alone with that description. I'll keep my eye's peeled. Have we gotten this PC that AA.com can't even help the police/community with a decent decription???
