Man knocked unconscious during early morning fight on East Liberty Street

By Kyle Feldscher

A 36-year-old Ann Arbor man was sent to the hospital Friday morning after he was knocked unconscious during a fight between six to eight men, police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said police responded at 3:30 a.m. Friday to the corner of East Liberty Street and Maynard Street for a report of a large fight. The 36-year-old Ann Arbor man had been knocked to the ground and was unconscious when police arrived, Bush said.

The other men involved in the fight ran toward the Maynard Street parking structure upon police arrival, Bush said.

Huron Valley Ambulance transported the man to the hospital where he was treated for a bump below his left eye, a bump on the left side of his forehead and bleeding from the bridge of his nose.

The reason for the fight was not known, but alcohol was a factor, Bush said.

This is why marijuana should remain illegal.

Ummm....How did you connect those dots? If anything...alcohol is to blame here, not a peaceful plant that grows naturally.

Things will not change in Ann Arbor until Ann Arborites start electing officials with more of a "law and order" mindset. The limo liberal elites who live in the city won't condone that until their property values are impacted by the criminal activity and general hooliganism that seem to prevade Ann Arbor these days. Many like to say that's just part of being a college town, but I currently live in a city 10 times the size of Ann Arbor with far fewer problems in this area. Remember, you get what you condone!

In the 10 years I've worked downtown, what I've seen (mind you, I'm from a city of 4.3 million) is a town ripe with permissiveness, with a tolerance of the wrong people (meaning the thugs, the 'dirties', the street people, the miscreants,). Not to beat a dead horse, but Liberty Plaza is the perfect example. 'We' tolerated that, meanwhile they've passed the No Idling Ordinance, the Pedestrian Ordinace, and they've taken away city services, (the town looks dirty, trash and tags everywhere) & safety services by slashing the PD & FD. We, as citizens, have to think differently, vote differently, in order to remove the people that their only priority is building monuments to their supposed greatness (city hall, parking structure, the new train station, all the 'Art' that they 'say' is for the people.) city hall should nanny the people that are responsible for creating the crime - and that can be accomplished by beefing up the Police Department. Telling me I can't idle my car (ps WHO is going to issue a ticket for that? The cops are busy running around to all the crime calls) is BS, plain and simple. Telling me how to treat a pedestrian, when all the state pretty much say (and everyone learns when their youngsters) that as a motorist, I am to stop when someone is in a crosswalk, is inane. City hall - STOP with the incessant nannying, and go FIX THE PROBLEMS YOU'VE CREATED BY PUTTING YOUR GRANDSTANDING PRIORITIES AHEAD OF YOUR CITIZENS SAFETY.

There has always been a group of hellions running around downtown. They are there just to make trouble. I believe it's because they're tired of not being recognized by the big money folks who basically look down on them. I have known some gangs or groups who just go attack people just because they were rich. Be it the frats or what ever. This behavior is going to get worse and worse as the gap between the rich and the poor widens. Also, this kind of class hatred is nothing new here or elsewhere. Like the three rich kids down in Mississippi, who went to Jackson Mis. just to beat up a low income black guy, and they had a history of beating on who ever was low income. Now spending the remainder of their life in prison, with low income folks. This behavior works both ways, and will fuel the path for more and more hatred because of money, and the lack of.

No comment here, don't live near the area. (and not awake at 3:30 a.m.)

What are those interested in a peaceful stroll through a parking structure at 3:30 in the morning to do in times like these?

Exactly - we need to repeal medical marijuana.

Booted 2 guys from my back alley @11am (Maynard/Williams/Liberty/State area). They were drunk, still drinking, had open sores, looked as if they were dragged out of a dumpster, and belligerent. Hello, City Hall? Clean up the town you've been voted to maintain. The cute whirleygigs on Main & Liberty aren't security devices. Now, if we can retrofit them with some lasers, then they might be useful. If you can't handle the job, hire some police officers to do it for you. Before someone gets seriously and permanently hurt. And try to do it before summer, or your precious Art Fair will be a huge Art Fail because no one wants to risk walking the streets of Ann Arbor.

Might not the empty Borders store contribute to a perception that no one is watching the area?

Isn't this a commonplace happening in Ann Arbor now? Remember the group of men who beat the victim with belts in the parking structure? Ann Arbor officials get a clue and make it so the police can start patrolling the downtown area. Yes, that would involve spending some money. Your town is moving toward bedlam.

Any description of the perps? A roving gang that big must have some kind of distinguishing characteristics?

I won't try to make any assumptions because that might violate the nebulous policies around here.
