Man vandalizes neighbor's car with frying pan and hammer, Ypsilanti police say

By Lee Higgins

A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday, suspected of using a frying pan and hammer to break out the windows of his neighbor's car during an argument, Ypsilanti police said.

The two got into a fight over loud music about 6:30 am. in the 700 block of Woody Court, when the man broke out the windows of the victim's car, a crime summary said.

After he vandalized the car, he locked himself in a home and ran out the back door when police forced their way inside, the summary said. The man was treated at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for some injuries sustained in the fight. He later was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail.

Charges are pending.

Ypsilanti police Det. Sgt. Troy Fulton could not be reached for comment Thursday.

I wonder if loud music was being played because of the proximity to I-94. Music having to compete with freeway traffic noise.

Glad I live in the country, go to bed with the birds chirping and waking up to the same. Sitting out on the screened in porch, or deck with my coffee watching a doe and her fawn, bunnies romping is the best time of the day. I keep my frying pans in the kitchen, they are not weapons.

For the people commenting about "morning" noise, remember not everyone works 9-5. I used to work the midnight shift. I liked going home having a meal and a beer (It's not breakfast time for me!) and then working in my garage with my radio blasting. My neighbors thought nothing of mowing their lawns in the afternoon while I was trying to sleep! One even ran a chipper-shredder between our houses once. Remember not everyone keeps the same schedule. I have two words that solves this problem "EAR PLUGS", get them, use them, learn to live with your neighbors w/o blood shed!

A scene from the Big Lebowski comes to mind. At least it was the right automobile this time.

This is what happens, Larry. Do you see what happens Larry? Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

I have a cast iron frying pan at home and it is awesome. It would do a heck of a lot of damage to a car, however an aluminum pan wouldn't pack the same wallop. I wonder which kind was used in this case? Also the hammer, was it of the sledge variety? Dead blow? Mallet? Ball pin? 10 lb?

Ditto, was the vandal also the noise polluter?
