Money stolen from Cherry Republic in Ann Arbor

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police continue to investigate who stole several hundred dollars in cash Friday from a register at Cherry Republic at 223 South Main St.

A female employee noticed that the register was short by hundreds of dollars Friday and found $80 in cash on the floor, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

The employee checked with management to see whether the drawer was short because someone deposited the money at the bank, Bush said.

After the employee and manager were unable to account for the money, the manager reported the theft at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone with information can call the police department's tip line at (734) 794-6939.

Hmmm...let's see...Black Friday shoppers AND crowds for the final Football game...too bad we didn't have some more cops downtown instead of traffic direction.

I second Tru2Blu76's sentiments about the rising crime, of late, especially on Main Street. Wasn't a jeweler's robbed recently on Main Street? In the grand scheme of things, however, I am not worried because our elected officials are comfortable with the level of crime in Ann Arbor. That being said, these types of incidents must be consistent with their expectations -- too bad they're not in line with the merchants', and public's, expectations. Will they ever restore proper funding to the Police and Fire Departments???

That's sad. I hope they catch the thief. And it's not good news in another way: Main Street crime seems to be on the rise and I live just minutes walk from such places as Cherry Republic and have shopped there.
