Two men rob pedestrian at gunpoint in Ypsilanti

By Cindy Heflin

Two men robbed another man of his wallet at gunpoint near Cornell Road and Roosevelt Boulevard Tuesday night, Ypsilanti police said.

The men walked up to the victim while he was walking home about 10:40 p.m., asked for a cigarette and pointed a silver handgun at him, police said. The robber took the victim’s wallet and fled south on Cornell.

Police used a dog to try to find the robbers but could not.

Eastern Michigan University posted a crime alert about the robbery and said the victim, who is not an EMU student, was not injured. The robbery was not on campus.

The victim said the men were black and in their early to mid-20s, EMU said in the crime alert. One was 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and was wearing a black jacket, white shirt, silver pants, and black shoes, EMU said. The second man was 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build, and was wearing a black/white knit hat, black coat, black pants and black shoes.

The age of the victim was not immediately available. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ypsilanti Police Department at 734-783-9510.

The phone number for the Ypsilanti Police Department is wrong in this story. It's 734-483-9510.

All Powerful God's first anti-crime message was that we must not violate any of His rules, including the one about learning and acquiring knowledge. He punished the humans He created, Adam & Eve, for violating the latter rule. God's 2nd anti-crime message was more detailed in the legal coda he gave Moses (ranging from around 10 up to over 600 commandments, depending on which book of the Bible you believe). He punished the Israelites (before they WERE Israelites) for ignoring and violating his Commandments (i.e. coda). After a while, violations became so frequent (much like in Ypsilanti) that he drowned all of Mankind except for one male and female pair (Noah and Mrs. Noah) as His third anti-crime message. Somewhat less impressive but still memorably, All Powerful God then devastated two cities (much like Ypsi and Detroit) with nuclear force phenomena - making that His 4th anti-crime message to us. Question: If God is infallible, how is it that He created beings so flawed that they need to be periodically obliterated because He gave them a thirst for knowledge and free will?

Neighborhood watch groups throughout the country are informed: they're only empowered to observe and report to police suspicious persons and criminal acts. If there had been neighborhood watch people near the scene of this robbery, then police would have had a better chance of catching these armed robbers. The victim was caught off guard and would have been unlikely to have the chance to defend himself even if legally armed. The highly questionable situation with the neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida is, by its rarity, a notable exception. The basic rule is: avoid if at all possible close contact with strangers who you have reason to believe need to be reported to police - FOR police action.

Ypsi is getting Detroit's reputation. Take back the streets before you become another Detroit.

One more: To add further irony, a cop currently lives on that corner (in the Collins murder house) and we could have been very close to yet another "bad place to do a crime" story. http://www.legalnews.com/washtenaw/1079296

By the way, this is a fairly historic corner in terms of area crime history. This is the corner where John Norman Collins uncle lived, and at least one if his victims was killed. http://www.annarbor.com/news/the-michigan-murders-is-one-of-those-rare-books-you-re-read-because-the-suspense-remains/

Hmmm. Maybe they need a neighborhood watch or something? It appears neither of the assailants were wearing a hoodie.
