Dexter Wellness Center aims for a 'culture of wellness' for community

After breaking ground in August, the Dexter Wellness Center opens on June 1.

The center is part of the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, a tax-exempt, private foundation to promote community health in Western Washtenaw County. The Dexter center is the fourth of the foundation’s health facilities and joins the Wellness Centers of Chelsea, Stockbridge and Manchester.

“One of our goals is to create a culture of wellness in our community to make it easier for people to make healthy choices,” said Amy Heydlauff, executive director of the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation.

The 46,000-square-foot facility at 2810 Baker Road includes 47 cardiovascular machines, 26 weight machines, full-amenity locker rooms, a dry sauna and a gymnasium. It also includes four 25-meter lap pools, a warm-water therapy pool and four studios for group exercise classes, including Zumba, yoga, cycling, Pilates and aerobics. The facility also will contain a child care room and Grab-N-Go Cafe.

Monthly and yearly memberships are available with varying fees offered for individuals, couples, families, youth and seniors. The one-time enrollment fee — about $300 — will be waived for those who register by June 8.

Angela Sargeant, the director of the center, said it is different than other gyms because it offers a medically integrated approach to wellness.

Upon registration, Sargeant said, every member fills out a detailed health questionnaire and fitness assessment — including flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, blood pressure and body composition. Members then receive a fitness program that takes into consideration each member’s personal restrictions and goals.

Sargeant said those with higher risk factors, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, are required to get approval from their primary-care physician before they can begin using the facility.

Heydlauff said health care providers can refer their patients to specific programs offered by the center for medical issues, including water aerobics for arthritis patients and mindful meditation for those dealing with stress. She said the center also will provide health lectures to the community to promote health education.

“Unlike many other gyms, this is not a place just for the fit, it’s actually a place for people with health and wellness concerns that are trying to move to a better state of health and wellness,” she said.

The facility is the result of years of planning and community partnership. While the center officially is run and leased by the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, the building is owned by DWC Investment, a group of four businessmen who collaborated to invest in a new health facility for the Dexter area.

Steve Brouwer is part of DWC Investment and owner of the A.R. Brouwer construction company that built the Dexter Wellness Center building. He said the goal was to provide the community a place where people of all different ages and fitness levels could actively take charge of their health.

“It is a family focused center and it is there for the entire Dexter community,” he said. “Regardless of a person’s age or family situation, the goal is to try and help anybody and everybody to use the center and take advantage of all the facilities there to improve their health.”

Though Brouwer declined to disclose how much his company invested to help build the facility, Heydlauff said the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation made an initial investment of about $1.5 million, including purchasing equipment and additional pre-opening costs.

“We’re willing to make an upfront investment in the community so that we can have that impact on people’s long-term health,” she said. “We consider this to be a mission expenditure.”

When fully up-and-running, the center is expected to create about 100 jobs, though Sargeant said about 60 people have been hired so far, many of whom are part-time.

The Dexter Wellness Center will have a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 to showcase the new facility, including tours, class demonstrations, chair massages, exercise tips, giveaways and general information about the facility. For more information visit www.dexterwellness.org.

I'm a member and regular user of the Washtenaw County Rec. Center. While convenient for residents of Ann Arbor and parts of Ypsilanti and Pittsfield Township, I can understand how it's not as convenient to others. Which facility one uses may depend on whether you prefer classes or just want to use equipment. I use equipment and do real workouts. I just want to do it, while some people want to follow instructors (though people can work with trainers at the gym, though I'm not familiar with the cost). Why would I need to consult wellness associates about working out when my physicians know I work out. Sometimes I get the impression that some people pay more attention to the whole panoply of wellness don't really exercise much. Exercise is part of routine movements. Walking up and down stairs instead of taking elevators everyone and running up and down stairs at home can be positive experiences, not hassles.

It's a lovely facility from what I can tell. I'm sure it is top notch. But, the article indicates that the Chelsea Area Wellness Foundation wants to establish a community-wide culture of wellness. Fact is that program of culture will miss a large portion of the local community. This faciilty mentions it is for the family, but from what I've been able to tell, it really doesn't cater to smaller children. Also, its rates are not amenable to families that have several potential participants. That may be good for many, but it doesn't really target a community for adopting a culture of wellness. Given this type of facility and the people it will cater to, the culture of wellness assertion sounds more like the typical platitudes tossed about by politicians than any meaningful effort to draw all of the community into a healthier lifestyle. Community recreational facilities in cities like Livonia and Dearborn are much more family friendly, have reasonable rates without long term memberships and offer a lot of good equipment, pools, etc. See: http://www.dearbornfordcenter.com/rates/fitness-pass http://www.ci.livonia.mi.us/Departments/ParksandRecreation/CommunityCenterDivision/BecomeaLCRCMemberToday.aspx I'd say it's fine facility and will well serve retirees, empty-nesters, or single exec types with a bit of disposable income to toss around. But, I think that probably misses a lot of people in the community in that area and really won't infuse any community-wide wellness culture.

The Dexter Wellness Center monthly costs are $70 a month - this is verified - also you can use other Wellness Centers (other than the one you signed up for....like Chelsea Wellness) for an additional $30 a month (waiting on verification). OUTRAGEOUS - there are plenty of other great gyms in the area that are half the costs (a lot of these gyms will waive the enrollment fee which is usually less than $100). Having been a member before (at Chelsea) - after your assessment they are done with you...unless....you want to spend a ton more money. During such hard financial times I think Dexter would have wanted to put in a facility that caters more to all the people than just a few!

While I agree that many cannot afford the monthly cost of membership, with the facilities and equipment offered, I really can't see how they could make it any cheaper. It is $115.00 per month for my wife and I for all of the equipment, swimming pools, locker rooms, exercise classes, etc. in a brand new facility. If paying for the entire year, you receive the 13th month free, and there is no risk, you can leave any time without paying a penalty.

The monthly cost is prohibitive for many. The same can be said of the Chelsea Wellness Center and the Health and Fitness Center at WCC. Please make these centers more affordable for the average citizen. The people who really need these services don't have the disposable income to pay the monthly fee.

They are kind of like Abercrombie & Fitch - they only cater to a select few which is a shame because there are so many people I think would become members there if it weren't so cost prohibitive.

@Kris, my monthly fee is $64. If you are a senior or a student it's around $45. If you add another family member it's approx $115. You get a discount if you pay yearly instead of monthly but I don't know what that rate is. I enrolled at the beginning of the year when the initiation fee was half the price, $75. They offer this several times throughout the year.

I used to belong to Ballys and the Meri Lou Murray County Rec Ctr. These are more affordable at first glance, but not if you want to do classes like yoga, Pilates, spinning, TRX, etc. There are plenty of cheap gym memberships in the Ann Arbor area, however they are economical if you are looking for cardio and weight training only, since they offer limited or no group classes. The wellness centers like WCC are more economical if you prefer classes since all of their group classes, and there are LOTS (spinning being the one you can't get at most gyms), are included in their membership fee. They also provide all your towels, filtered water, digi-lock lockers, hair care and body care products, and the free wellness evaluations periodically throughout the year. All of these things actually makes these wellness centers a better deal.

The wellness centers you mention are the very best the area has to offer and likely some of the nicest in the state. You get what you pay for and they have no lack of membership. I would recommend waiting for them to run a special where they waive enrollment fees. It happens once or twice a year. Until then, there are plenty of other places that are more affordable (Planet Fitness, Powerhouse, YMCA, etc.)

What exactly is the monthly fee? I see that there is a $300 enrollment fee but where is the regular fee structure. Couldn't seem to find it easily on their website.

I agree 100% with the monthly rates and a sign up fee. All the fitness centers you mentioned are managed by Power Wellness. After I found out who the management company was I wasn't surprised with the pricing. They need to get their prices in line with all the other fitness centers.
