Driver's road rage at off-duty deputy results in arrest

By Paula Gardner

A 31-year-old Ypsilanti man was drunk and angry while driving on M-36 in Livingston County last week, police said — and he tried to run a vehicle off the road, according to a report in LivingstonDaily.com.

But the driver of the other vehicle was an off-duty Livingston County Sheriff's deputy, who followed the man into a parking lot near the village of Hamburg and called for assistance.

Now the Ypsilanti man faces felony charges after his arrest on the scene.

@TDW; No, this is news because a drunk guy picked on the wrong guy to run off the road. The old "where is a cop when you need him" angle, coupled with the "stupid criminal didn't know who he was picking on" angle. You know, like: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/police-would-be-robber-beat-victim/nLcg8/ or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDWS54gIQQM or http://www.suntimes.com/news/crime/9261611-418/mugger-chooses-wrong-victim-ultimate-fighting-champ.html or http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2070480/Mugger-Anthony-Miranda-picks-wrong-victim-taking-ultimate-fighter--losing.html or http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/03/cleveland_cop_kills_suspect_wh.html or http://gothamist.com/2012/01/30/off-duty_cops_kills_man_trying_to_m.php or http://articles.nydailynews.com/2012-01-30/news/31007438_1_cane-officer-fires-fatal-confrontation or http://digg.com/newsbar/topnews/Robber_Beaten_By_72_Year_Old_Ex_Boxer but if you want to feel singled out, that's OK too.

Eyeheart..actually I do. 1 A2.com rarely reports on things that don't happen in Washtenaw County. Just to make sure I wasn't being paranoid I made comments on two occasions that were verbatim on comments about Ypsi I just replaced the word Ypsilanti with Ann Arbor. Both times I violated guidelines.

What did the cop do that made the guy angry?

Reacting to anger is a choice. One can pro-act and just ignore the other drivers who are aggressive, and make it home alive everyday. Cops are trained to observe, and that's what they do well, that's why we pay them. The problem is if they are not in a marked car, there cop behavior can piss people off. So when you see a car that is suspicious it probably is a cop. This mad man, didn't consider that in this instance.

No, it's news because it's humorous (now that we know no one was injured) as well as ironic that this alleged miscreant chose an off-duty deputy sheriff to harass.

It's not news if it happens every day. Just saying.

@redwingshero, I don't think either set of attributes is a recipe for life success (and, yes, as far as the "Animal House" reference goes, you're right).
