Ypsilanti High School Top Scholars

Ypsilanti High School held its 2010 graduation ceremonies’ June 8 in the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. The class had 227 graduates.

Elena Kaylil Brown

Parents’ name(s): Christopher and Michelle Brown

Activities and awards: Elena was a member of the YHS Chamber Singers, YHS Gospel Choir, Senior Cabinet, National Honor Society, and participated in the YHS 2010 Musical Production Grease. She received the Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship, a Y-award recipient, and an honor roll student.

Plans after graduation: EIena will be attending the University of Minnesota to study architecture.

Clarisse Cabatuando

Parents' name(s): Gilda and Eusebio Cabatuando

Activities and awards: Back in the Philippines, Clarisse was an active member of her Math and Science club from her freshmen year until her junior year. She also participated in leadership training and some other science camps. Since moving to the United States, she has joined the Crosstown Theater Troupe at Ypsilanti High School. Clarisse is an active member of her church, as well as the Salvation Army. During her sophomore year in the Philippines, Clarisse was chosen as one of the few students to be a part of the DSL Broadband Information Technology training. In her junior year, she was one of the representatives of her school and joined a group category Computer Regional Quiz bee and won 2nd place.

Plans after graduation: Clarisse has been accepted to both Eastern Michigan University and Michigan State University. She will be attending her first 2 years at Eastern Michigan University to take pre-engineering and may transfer to Michigan State University to finish her bachelor's degree in engineering

Kevin Chung

Parents' name(s): Father, Tri Hoa and mother, Peixian Chung

Activities and awards: Kevin was a member of the Marching Band, Chamber Singers, the Key Club, the Senior Cabinet, the National Honor Society, the Men's Tennis Team, and the Men's Swimming Team. He played the part of "Kenickie" in Ypsilanti High School's 2010 Spring Musical "Grease." His awards include the SEC Scholar Athlete Award (2009-2010) for swimming, and the SEC All-Academic Team (2009). Kevin received the Y-award Scholar recognition and was on the Principal's List and honor roll.

Plans after graduation: Kevin will be attending Michigan State University in the fall to study Environmental Engineering.

Carolina Fuentes

Parents’ name(s): Juan and Linda Fuentes

Activities and awards: Carolina has been active as a member of the Cross Country and Indoor Track teams. She was a member of the Key club, the Senior Cabinet, and the National Honor Society. She has received the Y-Award for academic excellence for the last three years. She is also a member of the Pathfinders (not part of YHS).

Plans after graduation: Carolina will attend the University of Michigan, leaning towards a psychology major.

Paul Good

Parents’ name(s): Nancy and Carter Good

Activities and awards: Paul received the Student Athlete Award and Y-Award. He was a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. Paul was captain of Mock Trial (4th in state finals); captain of the Tennis Team (Mega All Conference, divisional champ SEC, regional silver Medalist, Early Bird Invite Champion); captain of the Swimming Team (SEC Sportsman Award). He was section leader for the Marching Band and the Wind Symphony, playing in the Pit Band for the Spring Musical. Paul won the WXYZ’s “Brightest and Best” award, voted ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ by his peers and participated in Homecoming Court.

Plans after graduation: Paul plans on attending the University of Michigan Ann Arbor College of Engineering

Brianna Laure Jackson

Parents’ name(s): Claude and Emma Jackson

Achievements and awards: Brianna was President of the National Honor Society and was section leader in Wind Symphony and Marching Band. She has lettered in Golf (captain) and tennis and was an SEC Scholar/Athlete. She has received the Y Honors Award for four years, received the DAR Good Citizenship Award, won first place in the MLK 2010 Essay Contest and successfully graduated from the Ypsilanti Leadership 8-month program. Brianna is active with her church, enjoys going on annual World Changers mission trips and serving in the community.

Plans after graduation: Brianna plans to attend the LSA college at the University of Michigan where she will major in psychology in hopes of becoming a child psychologist.

Katherine Mattie

Parent's name(s): Richard and Barb Mattie

Activities and awards: Katherine was Senior Class President (part of the student government club, Senior Cabinet); a member of the Key Club, the National Honor Society and the Wind Symphony. She was "All Conference" Cross Country runner for two years; a runner for four and, captain for two. Katherine was a three-year Varsity Track runner; a member of the Women's Basketball (one season); a member of the Varsity Soccer (current season); commissioner for the City of Ypsilanti Parks and Recreation Commission; representative from the City of Ypsilanti Parks and Recreation Commission for the Ypsilanti Non-Motorized Transportation Plan. She was an Y-Award" recipient - lettering for academics; four time State finalist at the annual Solo and Ensemble competition with the highest scores all four years.

Plans after graduation: Katherine will be attending the University of Notre Dame to study Broadcast Journalism and Film.

Teresa Anne Ratajczak

Parents’ name(s): Michael Smith

Activities and awards: Teresa was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She has done a lot of local volunteer work and tutoring. Teresa received Ave Maria's highest institutional academic scholarship and other various academic awards over the last four years. She was also involved with TREE Club, which is an environmental group. Teresa was a member of the National Honor Society and student council.

Plans after graduation: Teresa will attend Ave Maria University in Florida for a dual major in Political Science and Classics.

Betelihem Tizazu

Parents' name(s): Father, Fetene Tizazu and mother, Zewditu Yeshanew

Activities and awards: Betelihem has been part of the Leadership Ypsilanti Program and Intercultural Group. She has been a senior cabinet member of the National Honor Society holding the position of co-secretary; a member of the Key Club and Track and Field Team. Betelihem has been involved with the Palladian Creative Arts Magazine the last two years. She has been on the honor roll and has received the Y-Award. Betelihem has been an alumnus of the National Young Leaders Conference; received the SCEEP Certificate of Participation; and has been a part of the Summer College Engineering Exposure Program.

Plans after graduation: Betelihem plans to attend the University of Michigan to obtain a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering or Pre-Medicine studies.

Laura Rose Virgo

Parents’ name(s): Denice Virgo and Scott Virgo

Activities and awards: Laura was a member of the Marching Band, Wind Symphony, and the National Honor Society. She has made the honor roll all four years, received various Solo and Ensemble medals, and two Y Awards.

Plans after graduation: Laura will be attending Grand Valley State University in the fall.

Brittany LeeAnn Watts

Parents’ name(s): Randy and Lisa Watts

Activities and awards: Brittany participated in the Color Guard/Marching Band (received "Key Player" Award), Women's Swimming and Water Polo (received Scholar Athlete Awards), Y-award (3 yrs) - for academic excellence, Wind Symphony. She took park in the 2010 Spring Musical--Grease, was on the honor roll, and was a member of Senior Cabinet and National Honor Society.

Plans after graduation: Brittany is planning to attend Central Michigan University to major in Journalism and Public Relations.

Wonderful to read about Ypsi's best scholars! An intro to the thumb-bios would have been nice, but I guess it's not Ann Arbor...
