Ex-Senate leader Tom Daschle says Ann Arbor is national leader in health insurance shift

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The nation's health care focus must shift from illness to wellness as it sets new expectations for the insurance industry, ex-U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle told an audience at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Tuesday.

According to a report in the Michigan Daily, Daschle said U-M's leadership in outlining value-based insurance design - a cornerstone of the federal health reform bill - sets an example for focusing on wellness and quality care as the U.S. heads toward major changes from the Affordable Care Act in 2014.

WHAT IS WELLNESS OR WELL-BEING ? I like this shift from illness or disease to pay attention to wellness or well-being. However, we have to pay attention to all the components of that wellness or well-being. To know the components of well-being, we have to define the components of man and understand man as a Whole Person. Most health insurance plans are designed to pay for medical, surgical, and other preventive, diagnostic, curative, restorative, and rehabilitative interventions to support the physical well-being of man and this may include some aspects of mental health care. That kind of approach towards health has not resolved the problems of well-being. We live in communities with problems like drug abuse, violence, crime, pollution and concerns like obesity. It compels us to give attention to man as he is found in his environment, and community. Hence, I define health as not the mere absence of disease, but as a state of complete well-being of man, the physical, mental, social, moral, and spiritual well-being of man in his environment and community. Man is a physical, mental, social, moral, and spiritual being who exists in a given environment and in a community. If I could quote the modern version of John Donne's meditation, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main..." There is no wellness or well-being if the term does not include the spiritual well-being of man. http://bhavanajagat.com/2011/11/16/science-and-spiritualism-biotic-interactions-and-consciousness/

Usually, with most insurance today, the amount the insurer pays the docs is already agreed upon. If you have insurance B, then it doesn't matter which doctor you go to, insurance B will pay the same. Only thing you can shop around is the health insurance check "Penny Health" for health insurance ideas to save money.
