A fire caused about $25,000 to $50,000 damage to a vacant house under construction in the 700 block of Miller Avenue in Ann Arbor today, firefighters said.

When firefighters arrived, shortly after a passerby reported the blaze at 4:45 p.m., the back of the home was on fire and flames were extending to the third floor, said Ann Arbor Fire Battalion Chief Robert Vogel.

The fire was believed to have started when copper pipe overheated in the basement, Vogel said. A plumber had been working there but was not at the home when the fire started, he said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, Vogel said.

The same house caught fire a year or two ago, Vogel said.

Furthermore, "A plumber had been working there but was not at the home when the fire started ..." is bad writing. Who knows where the plumber was when the fire started? He might well have been at home, since he presumably didn't live at this vacant house.

Saying that the fire started when "copper pipe overheated in the basement" doesn't make sense. Copper pipes don't just overheat by themselves. Is that really what Mr. Vogel said? A more likely explanation might be that the plumber was soldering the copper pipes with a torch and started a smoldering fire in something flammable near the pipes that broke into flames later.

The RAW Haus was home to various groups of punk rockers and served as a venue for numerous punk shows. In 2009 the property was condemned for code violations and the residents were evicted. You can find more information and pictures from the scene in this post: <a href="http://www.damnarbor.com/2011/05/breaking-news-raw-house-on-fire.html" rel='nofollow'>http://www.damnarbor.com/2011/05/breaking-news-raw-house-on-fire.html</a>

&quot;Next to Miller Manor&quot;. Maybe the former &quot;RAW House&quot; and the house next to it, which some brave and ambitious soul bought, and undertook to rehab a year or two ago. I have often wondered if he bit off more than he could chew with those places... they were a wreck. Hope he has deep pockets, or perhaps, good insurance.

Fire is not at Miller Manor - it is at the empty house immediately to the east, on the south side of Miller. It was one of the former &quot;Raw&quot; houses.

Oops, my bad English - it &quot;is&quot; one of the former &quot;Raw&quot; houses.
