Fundraiser for scholarship to honor Belleville Lake drowning victim
Friends and family of 20-year-old Heather Nicole Hill of Canton, who drowned in Belleville Lake Aug. 4, will pay tribute to Hill by raising money for a scholarship in her honor.
Hill and 28-year-old Eric Wayne Rose, 28, of Wayne, who also drowned, were swimming in Belleville Lake near Van Buren Park when they became disoriented in the dark according to Van Buren Township police. Lights were out in the area due to a power outage. Because of thunderstorms, a search was called off that Saturday night and a dive team recovered the bodies of Hill and Rose on Sunday, Aug. 5. They were found in 8 feet of water nearly 850 feet from the beach.
Hill received an art scholarship called the Damaris Fine Arts Award from Starkweather High School in Plymouth from which she graduated in 2010. She attended Schoolcraft College for two years.
Jennifer Grzymala, who knew Heather for 15 years, said Heather's goal was to become a fashion designer.
"She loved art and loved painting everything, especially nature scenes," said Grzymala. "We are trying to create a scholarship to help her memory live on and that will help another person be able to study art in school."
"Heather's mother and some friends have gotten together for the fundraiser for the scholarship," said Madison Wilburn, a friend of Hill's, who said she believes this is what Heather would want.
The fundraiser will be on Oct. 12 at Plaza Lanes, 42001 Ann Arbor Road in Plymouth and will include two games of bowling, drinks, food and shoes for $22. Check in starts at 8 p.m., and bowling begins at 8:30 p.m. Donations also will be accepted for a raffle. All of the money raised will go to the scholarship. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call 734-589-4768 or email Jennie671@sbcglobal.net by Oct. 5.
"Heather helped others put their life on track and would do anything for anyone," said Grzymala. "I can't stress enough what a beautiful, caring, loving soul Heather had."
