Homeless man arrested after woman is robbed at downtown Ann Arbor ATM

By Lee Higgins

A 23-year-old homeless man was arrested this morning after police said he shoved a woman to the ground as she was depositing money at an ATM in Ann Arbor and stole cash from her.

About 12:12 a.m., the woman was making a deposit at the ATM at Chase Bank on South Main Street, when the man approached and started talking to her, Ann Arbor police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

The 30-year-old Ann Arbor woman told the man to leave her alone, when he pushed her on the pavement and grabbed cash from her hand, Bush said.

The victim chased the man to Courthouse Square apartments on South Fourth Avenue, where witnesses helped police locate him, Bush said.

The man was arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. Charges are pending.

I don't think that's the meaning of the word they had in mind when they named it "Chase" bank. But, on the bright side, we could help jump-start the Ann Arbor economy by laying in a goodly supply of fresh hempen rope (bought locally, of course) and rigging up nooses right downtown. There's plenty of lightpoles available.

So, he's not homeless anymore. Now he has three squares and a cot, and a buddy named Butch.

I for one would never go to the ATM, walking or by car after dark. Glad she chased him, had witnesses to help police find him and arrest him. Perhaps he is now looking for a home (in jail-house) for the fall and winter.

Is it just me or does it seem like the articles on crime are on the rise? Is it because annarbor.com has nothing else to report on or is crime actually on the rise? Either way at least the public will be more aware and hopefully more cautious as a result.

I'm a big strapping dude and even I don't use the ATM on foot after dark. Too many crazy crackheads around these here parts.

Again. I feel really comfortable with the levels of crime in Ann Arbor. Such a small price to pay for public art and new bike paths. I mean how can public safety ever be as important as that? Thanks mayor and thanks city council. I think you do a swell job.

Safer than what?

Actually, cities with green areas, the beauty of art and more pedestrian and bicycle traffic are safer.

Was he inside the building? Or was he in the enclosed foyer? Did he have someone let him in? A description of the alleged mugger? Is he indeed homeless or a resident of Delonis?

I've been accosted several times outside the UMCU atm next to the library and asked for money. It's extremely intimidating to panhandle while someone is at the ATM, especially when you're fumbling with the deposit envelope, card and receipt.

panhandling is not quite the same Tom, as being assaulted and robbed! Just a tad bit differemce
